A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, mesophilic, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain 2-3T, was isolated from surface seawater at Muroto city, Kochi prefecture, Japan. This strain grew well with starch. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain fell within the family Rhodobacteraceae and that the strain was related most closely to the genus Pacificibacter (94.0 % sequence similarity to the type strain). The DNA G+C content was 52.4 mol%. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, C14 : 0 and C16 : 0. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified lipid, one unidentified aminolipid and one unidentified phospholipid. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10. Strain 2-3T did not grow at 4 or 35 °C, while the type strain of the type species of the genus Pacificibacter grows at both temperatures. From the taxonomic data obtained in this study, it is proposed that strain 2-3T be placed into a novel genus and species named Amylibacter marinus gen. nov., sp. nov. in the family Rhodobacteraceae . The type strain of Amylibacter marinus is 2-3T ( = NBRC 110140T = LMG 28364T).

A Gram-stain-negative, motile, mesophilic, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium, strain 8-8T, was isolated from surface seawater at Muroto, Kochi, Japan. The strain exhibited agar-degrading activity. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain fell within the family Alteromonadaceae and clustered distantly with members of the genus Glaciecola (≤94.0 % similarity). The DNA G+C content was 41.8 mol%. The major fatty acids were C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c and the major hydroxy fatty acid was C12 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified polar lipid; lysophosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified polar lipids were found as minor components. The major quinone was Q-8. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain 8-8T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Agaribacter marinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Agaribacter marinus is 8-8T ( = NBRC 110023T = LMG 28167T).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, mesophilic, aerobic, rod-shaped or spherical bacterium, strain 2A-7T, was isolated from surface seawater at Muroto city, Kochi prefecture, Japan. The strain produced a pigment(s), the absorption spectrum of which closely resembled that of β-carotene. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain fell within the family Flavobacteriaceae and clustered distantly with the type strains of species of the genus Lutibacter (up to 93.9 % similarity). The DNA G+C content was 34.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and three unidentified lipids. Menaquinone 6 was detected as the sole isoprenoid quinone. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain 2A-7T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Flavicella marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Flavicella marina is 2A-7T ( = NBRC 110145T = KCTC 42197T).

A Gram-staining-negative, orange-pigmented, strictly aerobic, carotenoid-producing, rod-shaped, non-flagellated, non-spore-forming bacterium, motile by gliding, designated strain CC-AMO-30DT, was isolated from surface seawater collected near Taichung harbour, Taiwan. Strain CC-AMO-30DT shared pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 94.8, 93.7 and 92.5 % with the type strains of the type species of the genera Joostella , Pustulibacterium and Galbibacter , respectively, and formed a distinct monophyletic lineage in phylogenetic trees. The major fatty acids (≥5 % of total) were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, four unidentified lipids, two unidentified aminolipids and an unidentified phospholipid. The major polyamine was the triamine sym-homospermidine. The DNA G+C content was 47.1 mol% and the predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). Based on the phylogenetic distinctiveness and distinguishing phenotypic characteristics, strain CC-AMO-30DT represents a novel genus and species of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Robertkochia marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain of the type species Robertkochia marina is CC-AMO-30DT ( = JCM 18552T = BCRC 80469T). Emended descriptions of the genera Joostella and Galbibacter are also proposed.

A Gram-staining-negative, non-pigmented, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, non-motile bacterium, devoid of bacteriochlorophyll, designated strain CC-AMW-ET, was isolated from surface seawater off the coast at Kending, Taiwan. Strain CC-AMW-ET shared 95.7 and 93.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively, with the type strains of the type species of the genera Donghicola ( Donghicola eburneus SW-277T) and Roseovarius ( Roseovarius tolerans EL-172T). The predominant (>75 % of the total) fatty acid was summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c). The polar lipid profile included major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminolipid. In addition, moderate amounts of an unidentified lipid and trace amounts of an unidentified phospholipid were detected. The DNA G+C content was 67.9 mol%. Ubiquinone Q-10 was the sole respiratory quinone. Based on its phylogenetic distinctiveness and distinguishing phenotypic characteristics (in particular its polar lipid pattern), we conclude that strain CC-AMW-ET represents a novel genus and species of the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which the name Youngimonas vesicularis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Youngimonas vesicularis is CC-AMW-ET ( = JCM 18819T = BCRC 80549T). In addition, an emended description of the genus Donghicola Yoon et al. 2007 and the reclassification of Donghicola xiamenensis Tan et al. 2009 as Pseudodonghicola xiamenensis gen. nov., comb. nov. (type strain Y-2T = MCCC 1A00107T = LMG 24574T = CGMCC 1.7081T) are proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, ovoid-rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain SM1903T, was isolated from surface seawater of the Mariana Trench. The strain grew at 15–37 °C (optimum, 35 °C) and with 1–15 % (optimum, 4 %) NaCl. It hydrolysed aesculin but did not reduce nitrate to nitrite and hydrolyse Tween 80. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SM1903T formed a separate lineage within the family Rhodobacteraceae , sharing the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with type strains of Pseudooceanicola antarcticus (95.7 %) and Roseisalinus antarcticus (95.7 %). In phylogenetic trees based on single-copy OCs and whole proteins sequences, strain SM1903T fell within a sub-cluster encompassed by Oceanicola granulosus , Roseisalinus antarcticus and Histidinibacterium lentulum and formed a branch adjacent to Oceanicola granulosus . The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c), C16 : 0 and 11-methyl-C18 : 1  ω7c. The polar lipids mainly comprised phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified lipid, one unidentified aminolipid, and one unidentified glycolipid. The solo respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SM1903T was 66.0 mol%. Based on the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and phylogenetic characterization for strain SM1903T, it is considered to represent a novel species of a novel genus in the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which the name Pelagovum pacificum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SM1903T (=MCCC 1K03608T=KCTC 72046T).
