Primary thyroid carcinoma after thyroid ablation by radioactive iodine is rare. We present a very rare condition of lateral apparent papillary thyroid carcinoma eight years after receiving radioactive iodine for thyrotoxicosis, which led to complete anatomical and functional involution of the thyroid gland.

Due to relevance of the problem, prediction of biological behaviour of neoplasias in mammary glands of dogs requires using contemporary approaches to the study, first of all, of ways of dissemination of tumour cells. One of them is studying the mechanisms of migration of cancer cells out of the neoplasm tissues with further dissemination and development of metastatic sites in the regional lymphatic nodes and remote tissues. We studied the survival period of bitches with tumours of the mammary glands following regional or unilateral mastectomy. Among malignant mammary tumours in bitches, the most often diagnosed were single tumours (57.5%), which histologically were classified to carcinomas – ductal (26.9%) and mixed type (21.9%). Probability of intratumoral invasion to blood vessels equaled 12.0%, to lymph vessels – 7.8%, lymph nodes – 12.8%. It depends on the histological type of the tumour, the most aggressive potentially being сomedocarcinoma, tubulopapillary carcinoma and ductal carcinoma. Parameters of life expectancy and survival level after mastectomy depend on clinical stage of the disease (increase in the stage from the first to the third was characterized by decrease from 12.8 ± 9.5 to 9.4 ± 7.8 months), presence of angio/lymphatic invasions, presence of angiolymphatic invasion, but had no correlation with the size of the tumours. An important predictor of tumour-related death of dogs suffering neoplasias of the mammary glands is index vet-NPI, which has significant correlation with the clinical stage according to Owen and median survival. In particular, median survival in patients with the index lower than 4 exceeded the corresponding values in dogs with the index above 4 by 1.3 times. A promising direction of further research would be studying biological mechanisms of development of tumour emboli in the blood and lymph vessels, metastatic sites in lymph nodes, and also determining their role in pathogenesis of canine mammary tumours.

Introduction: We present a patient with carcinoma of the tongue with а lymph node and thyroid metastasеs. The squamous cell cancer of the tongue’s 5-year survival rate has not been improved in the last three decades. Most common sites of metastases are the locoregional lymph nodes, followed by distant pulmonary, liver, bone and skin metastasеs. Only ten cases of metastases to the thyroid gland are reported in the literature. Case report: A 79-year old man presented to the University Hospital in Varna, Bulgaria. Two months before admission, he noticed swelling of the tongue and progressive weight loss. The inspection of the oral cavity revealed a lesion on the left margin of the tongue. A biopsy was performed with a histological result of differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. A computed tomography scan of the head and neck region discovered a lesion in the right thyroid lobe. 18-fluoro-2-deoxy-glucose-positron emission tomography imaging showed a metabolically active tumor of the tongue with hypermetabolic metastatic cervical lymph nodes and a zone with abnormally elevated fixation of 18F-FDG in the central part of the soft palate. The described thyroid nodule did not have an increased tracer uptake. It was cytologically assessed after fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) as a metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. Conclusions: Distant metastases from tongue cancer to the thyroid gland are extremely rare and mostly occur in the advanced stages of malignancy.

Abstract Thymocytes are genuine lymphocytes. The largest lymphocytes of lymph nodes do not occur in the thymus; the smallest ones with pacychromatic nuclei and scanty cytoplasm are more numerous in the thymus. Some lymphoblasts similar to myeloblasts occur in the rabbit thymus. All three types of granulocytes develop from lymphocytes and to some extent from the mesenchymatous reticulum in the rabbit. In the rabbit the heterophil and eosinophil granules are acidophilic when first formed, while in the human thymus many have a basophilic quota as in the marrow. The reticulum is largely of epithelial origin and retains its epithelial characteristics in cytoplasm and nucleus. In the rabbit some mesenchymatous tissue is blended with the reticulum and may give origin to lymphocytes and granulocytes. The epithelium may form macrophages but does not differentiate to lymphocytes and other types of cells. In imprints from the rabbit the epithelial cells usually can be distinguished from those of the mesenchymatous reticulum. During regeneration following irradiation the latter tissue can be seen to form some lymphocytes locally; other lymphocytes enter the organ through the lymph vessels. Imprints stained with May-Grünwald and Giemsa are of great value for detailed cytology of the thymus and for determining cell relationships. Sections of thymus fixed in Helly’s fluid, stained with methyl green and pyronin and dehydrated in dioxan are excellent for lymphocytes and the transitional stages resulting from their development from fixed mesenchymatous tissue during regeneration of the organ following exposure to x-rays.
