The spool-and-line technique has been neglected in the study of the behavioural ecology of mammals. It has advantages over the more widely used method of radio tracking in terms of cost and depth of detail in the data obtained, despite its limitations. A spool and line was used to study habitat use of two species of Rattus on Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos, in areas of sympatry and allopatry. Significantly longer total spool lines were collected from R. rattus than R. norvegicus, and R. rattus also climbed trees significantly more. Significantly longer spool lines were collected from female than male R. rattus, and rats caught in the morning spent significantly more time on the ground than those caught at night. The method of handling and the occasion of capture (first, second, or third) had no significant effect on either the total length of spool line collected or the proportion of time spent on the ground. Arboreality in R. rattus was compared with that in R. norvegicus between areas of sympatry and allopatry, and a significant difference was found between sites in terms of both the total length of spool line collected and the proportion of time spent on the ground. Rattus rattus was least arboreal at site D, an area of allopatry, and most arboreal at site B, where the fewest trees occurred, suggesting that factors other than vegetation structure influence arboreality. The use of spool-and-line devices in the study of behavioural ecology is discussed.

Black rats (Rattus rattus) and house mice (Mus musculus) from Lord Howe Island were live-trapped, housed in the laboratory and tested for resistance to the anticoagulant poison warfarin. All rats fed warfarin (0.025% w/w) in their diet died within 4–12 days whereas no rats in the untreated group died. Mice fed warfarin at the same concentration over 21 days all survived. Black rats on Lord Howe Island remain susceptible to warfarin, but house mice appear resistant.

A three-year programme to eradicate Feral Cats Felis catus from the island of Baltra in the Galapagos archipelago achieved good results by initially poisoning with sodium monofluoroacetate (compound 1080) then trapping or shooting the remaining cats. The poisoning campaign removed 90% of the cats, its success being attributable to pre-baiting with unpolsoned baits to accustom cats to eating baits and placing enough baits to ensure that all cats encountered several baits within their home range. This, together with the use of metaclopromide (Pileran) as an anti-emetic, overcame a problem associated with poor retention of 1080 in thawed fish baits that limited the dose available to 1 mg 1080/bait, a quality insufficient to kill large cats. Removal of the remaining cats was delayed by a weather-induced irruption of Black Rats Rattus rattus and House Mice Mus musculus that enabled recruitment of kittens in 2002, but made cats more susceptible to trapping and shooting in 2003 when rodent populations collapsed. Since July 2003 no sign of a cat has been detected on Baltra despite extensive searching and monitoring throughout 2004. As cat abundance has decreased there have been more locally-bred Juvenile iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus) seen during annual censuses. However, such recruitment may reflect the increasing maturity and higher fecundity of iguanas repatriated from 1991 onwards rather than being a direct result of reduced cat predation alone. More time is necessary to determine the benefits of reduced cat predation on the Iguana population.

Abstract As agricultural areas expand, interactions between wild animals and farmland are increasing. Understanding the nature of such interactions is vital to inform the management of human–wildlife coexistence. We investigated patterns of space use of two Critically Endangered Galapagos tortoise species, Chelonoidis porteri and Chelonoidis donfaustoi, on privately owned and agricultural land (hereafter farms) on Santa Cruz Island, where a human–wildlife conflict is emerging. We used GPS data from 45 tortoises tracked for up to 9 years, and data on farm characteristics, to identify factors that influence tortoise movement and habitat use in the agricultural zone. Sixty-nine per cent of tagged tortoises used the agricultural zone, where they remained for a mean of 150 days before returning to the national park. Large male tortoises were more likely to use farms for longer periods than female and smaller individuals. Tortoises were philopatric (mean overlap of farmland visits = 88.7 ± SE 2.9%), on average visiting four farms and occupying a mean seasonal range of 2.9 ± SE 0.3 ha. We discuss the characteristics of farm use by tortoises, and its implications for tortoise conservation and coexistence with people.

Darwin’s finches are a classic example of adaptive radiation involving differential use of dietary resources among sympatric species. Here, we apply stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N, and δ2H) analyses of feathers to examine ecological segregation among eight Darwin’s finch species in Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos collected from live birds and museum specimens (1962–2019). We found that δ13C values were higher for the granivorous and herbivorous foraging guilds, and lower for the insectivorous finches. Values of δ15N were similar among foraging guilds but values of δ2H were higher for insectivores, followed by granivores, and lowest for herbivores. The herbivorous guild generally occupied the largest isotopic standard ellipse areas for all isotopic combinations and the insectivorous guild the smallest. Values of δ2H provided better trophic discrimination than those of δ15N possibly due to confounding influences of agricultural inputs of nitrogen. Segregation among guilds was enhanced by portraying guilds in three-dimensional isotope (δ13C, δ15N, and δ2H) space. Values of δ13C and δ15N were higher for feathers of museum specimens than for live birds. We provide evidence that Darwin’s finches on Santa Cruz Island tend to be generalists with overlapping isotopic niches and suggest that dietary overlap may also be more considerable than previously thought.
