AbstractBenzyl 9H-carbazole-9-carbodithioate (BCC) was synthesized and characterized. The single-crystal structure of BCC was first reported. The RAFT polymerizations of styrene and acrylates using BCC as the RAFT agent under conventional polymerization conditions were investigated. The results showed that the BCC was an effective RAFT agent for the polymerizations of styrene and acrylates. The well-controlled polymers were labelled with carbazole group, which was confirmed by 1H NMR and the chain extension of the obtained polymer. Azo modified poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) was synthesized through a postpolymerization azo-coupling scheme. The optical properties of obtained polymer were also characterized. The results showed that the carbazole group labelled polymer exhibited fluorescence and the azo polymer exhibited UV absorption behaviour in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF).

In order to understand the effect of β-diketone ligands containing carbazole group on luminescent europium (III) complexes, a series of europium (III) complexes (Phen)Eu (DBM)3-nLnwith 1-(9-Ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-4,4,4-trifluorobutane-1,3-dione (L) were synthesized and investigated contrastively (n = 0, 1, 2, 3; DBM: dibenzoylmethane; Phen: 1,10-phenanthroline). The results show amorphous nature, glass transition temperatures and luminescent intensity can be improved obviously by 1-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-4,4,4-trifluorobutane-1,3-dione, at the same time, their thermal decomposition temperatures have seldom effected by it. The results verify the performance of europium (III) complexes used as luminescent materials can be effectively improved by the β-diketone ligands of this type.

The synthesis of isotactic poly(N-butenyl-carbazole) (i-PBK) by using homogeneous isospecific Ziegler-Natta catalytic system is reported. The achieved polymer is crystalline and shows, to DSC and X-ray analysis, two distinct crystalline phases.i-PBK FTIR spectrum and X-ray diffraction pattern are compared with those of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK). The observed differences are tentatively associated with higher flexibility of thei-PBK chains due to the alkylene group connecting the carbazole group to the main chain.i-PBK optical properties are also compared with those of PVK and isotactic poly(N-pentenyl-carbazole) (i-PPK), a higher homologue ofi-PBK recently used as emitting layer in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) showing white light emission. The close similarity of the fluorescence spectra ofi-PBK andi-PPK is a promising basis for optical applications of this polymer.
