Community Service aims to determine the ability of students in the Implementation of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Based on Entrepreneurship of Dumbo Catfish Cultivation with Bioflok and Feed Media made by Palm Kernel Oil (BIS). P2M activities are conducted at Pekanbaru Purnama Middle School through Extracurricular learning activities from March to June 2019. Participants are 20 students consisting of 4 groups. The method of using the STEM approach with the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model consists of 3 stages, namely: 1. Preparation: bioflok making training, feed making and seed procurement; 2. Implementation: treatment, maintenance, supervision and collection of growth data, operational costs: 3. Analysis of entrepreneurial economic data and STEM capabilities. Instrument for collecting growth data and operational costs using logbooks and observation sheets. Data on STEM and Entrepreneurship Capabilities using Student Worksheets. Data on fish growth and operational costs, then percentage, were scaled, tabulated and analyzed descriptively. The results of STEM abilities were obtained namely Science ability with a score of 80 (good category); Engineering 50 ability (less category), Technology ability with a score of 60 (sufficient category) and Mathematical ability with a score of 65 (sufficient category). Entrepreneurial economic analysis with a score of 75 (sufficient category) and 50% of participants get a profit of 30% from catfish production within 3 months.

Enhancing expertise in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is vital to promoting both the intellectual and economic development of a modern society. This chapter synthesizes relevant studies on the acquisition and development of STEM expertise from different areas of research, including cognitive psychology, the psychology of science, sociology and anthropology, and educational research. Specifically, first, the structure of relevant STEM disciplines in conceptualizing the domain of expertise are discussed. Then the fundamental mechanisms of thinking and problem-solving practices in science and engineering that underlie expert performance within these disciplines are presented. Issues pertaining to assessment and recognition of expertise in STEM fields are also examined. Lastly, evidence pertaining to the impact of training and education on the development of STEM expertise is reviewed. The chapter closes with a critical analysis of STEM expertise research to date and identifies unanswered critical questions and new directions for future research.

Despite the ubiquity of prerequisites in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula, there has been minimal effort to assess their value in a data-driven manner. Using both quantitative and qualitative data, we examined the impact of prerequisites in the context of a microbiology lecture and lab course pairing. Through interviews and an online survey, students highlighted a number of positive attributes of prerequisites, including their role in knowledge acquisition, along with negative impacts, such as perhaps needlessly increasing time to degree and adding to the cost of education. We also identified a number of reasons why individuals do or do not enroll in prerequisite courses, many of which were not related to student learning. In our particular curriculum, students did not believe the microbiology lecture course impacted success in the lab, which agrees with our analysis of lab course performance using a previously established “familiarity” scale. These conclusions highlight the importance of soliciting and analyzing student feedback, and triangulating these data with quantitative performance metrics to assess the state of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula.

It is important to develop a student’s awareness to enable them to understand and apply the basics of sciences, mathematics, and engineering. In this study, we aim to implement STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education by enabling students to gain awareness on their own. We propose study aids and procedures for a project activity using study aids for STEM education. To enable students to gain awareness, teachers should provide a study environment that empowers students to develop their own solutions and plans and to actively develop and test their models. The project-based learning (PBL) system provides an appropriate study environment. Based on this viewpoint, we developed study aids using LEGO MINDSTORMS Set and Simple & Powered Machines Set as materials and procedures for a project activity using the study aids for PBL education. We also give examples of project activities implemented in our education system for students in various fields and we report the responses of students who participated in these project activities.
