The Halon 1301 fixed gas fire extinguishing system used in ship engine rooms has been banned from production all over the world, because halon destroys the ozone layer. Therefore, it is necessary to find an environmentally friendly, compatible and efficient alternative firefighting system. In this study, we performed fire extinguishing tests in an ISO9705 standard room for four alternative fire extinguishing agents, as well as Halon 1301. The fire extinguishing efficiency of each agent was determined based on its cooling effect, dilution effect of oxygen concentration, the extinguishing time of the oil pool fire and the re-ignition probability of the wood stack. The test results provide data support for the selection of alternatives of Halon 1301 from the aspect of fire extinguishing efficiency. Among these results, Novec 1230 had the best ability to put out the oil pool fire, and HFC-227ea suppressed the wood stack fire the best. The difference between the cooling ability of each fire extinguishing agent was small, and the inert gas (IG-541) displayed the best ability to dilute oxygen. Hot aerosol required the longest time to extinguish fire. Consequently, under the existing design standards, HFC-227ea had the better firefighting efficiency, more suitable to replace Halon 1301.

With the advantage of high adaptability, Miura-origami structure with curvature shows various engineering applications such as a sandwich between two stiff facings with curvature requirements and structural support to form a circular tube. In this research, a forming method of polymer circular tube with single-curved surface origami expressed by five parameters was established and its corresponding theory was solved considering forming rationality in actual manufacturing. The components of circular tube were fabricated by the vacuum forming process and then spliced together. We conducted numerical simulation to analyze the structural performance of the tube with five parameters and shown that these parameters have a great influence on energy absorbed performance. Finally, a male mold of a part with Arc Miura-origami structure was designed and fabricated. The parts with Arc Miura-origami were manufactured using vacuum forming process and then spliced and bonded together into a two-layer tube. This research may provide a method to design and fabricate Miura-origami structure with high efficiency and quality.

The objective of this work is to experimentally and numerically evaluate small-scale cryosurgery using an ultrafine cryoprobe. The outer diameter (OD) of the cryoprobe was 550 μm. The cooling performance of the cryoprobe was tested with a freezing experiment using hydrogel at 37 °C. As a result of 1 min of cooling, the surface temperature of the cryoprobe reached −35 °C and the radius of the frozen region was 2 mm. To evaluate the temperature distribution, a numerical simulation was conducted. The temperature distribution in the frozen region and the heat transfer coefficient was discussed.

Many studies have been done previously on temperature distribution in inhomogeneous composite systems with perfect interface, having no discontinuities along it. In this paper we have determined steady state temperature distribution in two inhomogeneous composite systems with imperfect interface, having discontinuities in temperature and heat flux using decomposed immersed interface method and performed the numerical simulation on MATLAB.
