Quantum dots (QDs) have a great potential to be applied as a biosensor to detect cancer cells because of their properties such as high photoluminescence, photo stability, narrow peak of luminescence, etc. However, cadmium sulphide (CdS) quantum dots are toxic and hydrophobic, making it impossible to be applied into biomaterials. A template is needed to make CdS QDs nontoxic and hydrophilic. The optical properties of these QDs are needed to be protected. To achieve this purpose, the template for CdS QDs has been designed by capping CdS QDs with apo-ferritin shells before aligning them onto cylindrical perpendicular PS-b-P2VP template, with the aim of locating CdS QDs appropriately in sequence. A host-guest system can be developed.

Excitonic effects are observed in the optical absorption and photoluminescence of strongly confined CdS quantum dots embedded in the polymer matrix. CdS nanoparticles of different crystallite sizes have been prepared by chemical route with polymer as a host material. The CdS nanocomposite film was made up of particle smaller than 5 nm and shows a composite band gap up to 3.2 eV, whereas the band gap for bulk hexagonal CdS is about 2.42 eV. Photoluminescence spectra show a strong emission band corresponding to electron–hole recombination and a weak band due to defect emission. The decrease of particle size was monitored from the U-V visible absorption measurement as well as photoluminescence, which suffered blue shift with decrease in particle size. The particle size and surface morphology were also analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).

We report the preparation, structural, electrochemical and photocatalytic studies of monodispersed cadmium sulphide quantum dots from didecylaminyl dithiocarbamate and 4-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl) anilinyl dithiocarbamate cadmium(II) complexes. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern confirms hexagonal crystalline phases for the as-preapred CdS quantum dots irrespective of the precursor used with particle size of 3.39-5.51 nm. Optical absorption band edges of 515 nm were observed for the cadmium sulfide quantum dots with energy band gaps estimated from the Tauc plots of 1.97 eV for OLM-CdS1 prepared from Cd(II) didecylaminyl dithiocarbamate and 1.92 eV for OLM-CdS2 prepared from Cd(II) 4-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl) anilinyl dithiocarbamate. These energy band gaps are blue shifted with respect to the bulk cadmium sulphide. The calculated electrochemical band gap of 2.34 V and 3.30 V are higher than band gap energy. The as-prepared CdS quantum dots were used as photocatalysts for the photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue (MB) with efficiency of 61 % and 55 %.
