AbstractInformation on the thermal properties of materials is very important both in fundamental physical research and in engineering applications. The development of materials with desirable heat transport properties requires methods for their experimental determination. In this paper basic concepts of the measurement of parameters describing the heat transport in solids are discussed. Attention is paid to methods utilizing nonstationary temperature fields, especially to photothermal methods in which the temperature disturbance in the investigated sample is generated through light absorption. Exemplary photothermal measuring techniques, which can be realized using common experimental equipment, are described in detail. It is shown that using these techniques it is possible to determine the thermal diffusivity of bulk transparent samples, opaque and semi-transparent plate-form samples, and the thermal conductivity of thin films deposited on thick substrates. Results of the investigation of thermal diffusivity of the ground in the polar region, which is based on the analysis of the propagation of the thermal wave generated by sun-light, are also presented. Based on chosen examples one can state that photothermal techniques can be used for determination of the thermal properties of very different materials.

The article presents the results of studies of the thermal fatigue strength of diesel cylinder heads and their resource under operating conditions, by using the most advanced technology for their restoration. Based on the results of theoretical calculations of durability and operational studies, a restoration technology has been proposed, which makes it possible to increase the resource of cylinder heads by 2 ÷ 2.5 times. For this purpose, the non-uniformity of the temperature field on the firing bottom of the cylinder heads of YaMZ-238NB diesel engines was theoretically determined and experimentally confirmed. On the basis of theoretical calculations, the most heatstressed sections of the plane of the cylinder heads of diesel engines bonded to the cylinder block were determined, and the appearance of cracks in them. When developing a method for calculating the temperature fields of the fire bottom, the universal finite element method (FEM) was used. This method makes it possible to take into account the geometry and conditions of thermal loading of the cylinder heads quite accurately. For the determination of temperature fields, a well-founded assignment of the boundary conditions is crucial. With this in mind, a number of surfaces were determined that characterize the durability of the entire part during operation. As a result of calculations carried out on a computer, temperature fields have been obtained that make it possible to analyze the distribution of temperatures and temperature gradients at any point of the fire bottom. The highest temperatures (620...635K) are localized in the central part of the fire bottom, which is two times higher in thermal intensity than the peripheral one and confirms the appearance of cracks in these places during the operation of diesel cylinder heads.

This paper presents an analytical and numerical computation of laminar natural convection in a collection of vertical upright-angled triangular cavities filled with air. The vertical wall is heated with a uniform heat flux; the inclined wall is cooled with a uniform temperature; while the upper horizontal wall is assumed thermally insulated. The defining aperture angle ? is located at the lower vertex between the vertical and inclined walls. The finite element method is implemented to perform the computational analysis of the conservation equations for three aperture angles ? (= 15?, 30? and 45?) and height-based modified Rayleigh numbers ranging from a low Ra = 0 (pure conduction) to a high 109. Numerical results are reported for the velocity and temperature fields as well as the Nusselt numbers at the heated vertical wall. The numerical computations are also focused on the determination of the value of the maximum or critical temperature along the hot vertical wall and its dependence with the modified Rayleigh number and the aperture angle.

The present study deals with the experimental determination of the performance of a 100 mm diameter plain journal bearing submitted to a misalignment torque. Hydrodynamic pressure and temperature fields in the mid-plane of the bearing, temperatures in two axial directions, oil flow rate, and minimum film thickness, were all measured for various operating conditions and misalignment torques. Tests were carried out for rotational speeds ranging from 1500 to 4000 rpm with a maximum static load of 9000 N and a misalignment torque varying from 0 to 70 N.m. The bearing performances were greatly affected by the misalignment. The maximum pressure in the mid-plane decreased by 20 percent for the largest misalignment torque while the minimum film thickness was reduced by 80 percent. The misalignment caused more significant changes in bearing performance when the rotational speed or load was low. The hydrodynamic effects were then relatively small and the bearing offered less resistance to the misalignment.
