Abstract Temperature is one of the important factors affecting both chemical pretreatment and anaerobic digestion (AD) process of corn stalk (CS). In this work, the combined ways between pretreatment temperature (40℃ and 60℃) and AD temperature (35℃ and 55℃) were selected to investigate the AD performance for sodium hydroxide (NaOH) pretreated CS. Three organic loading rates (OLRs) of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 g·L-1·d-1 were studied within 255 days using continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR). The results revealed that temperature of 40°C was considered as an appropriate for pretreatment whether in mesophilic or thermophilic anaerobic digestion systems. On the other hand, temperature of 35°C and 55°C were chosen as the optimal AD temperatures for lower and higher OLRs, respectively. This study provides a significant insight for exploring the effects of temperatures on the pretreatment and AD of CS.

Anaerobic digestion is state-of-the-art technology to treat sludge and effluents from various industries. Modelling and optimisation of digestion operations can be advantageously performed using the anaerobic digestion model (ADM1) from the International Water Association. The ADM1, however, lacks a proper physico-chemical framework, which makes it difficult to consider wastewater of complex ionic composition and supersaturation phenomena. In this work, we present a direct implementation of the ADM1 within the PHREEQC chemistry engine. This makes it possible to handle ionic strength effects and ion-pairing. Thus, multiple mineral precipitation phenomena can be handled while resolving the ADM1. All these features can be accessed with very little programming effort, while retaining the full power and flexibility of PHREEQC. The distributed PHREEQC code can be easily interfaced with process simulation software for future plant-wide simulation of both wastewater and sludge treatment.

Due to the presence of complicated and considerable amounts of toxic compounds such as phenolic compounds, thiocyanate and ammonium, coal gasification wastewater (CGW) would cause a serious environmental problem. Conventional treatment of CGW includes a series of biological treatment (mostly anoxic-aerobic process and activated sludge process) after a physico-chemical pretreatment to reduce the concentrations of phenols and ammonium. Although quite effective, these processes are still not enough to meet the strict requirements of the National Discharge Standard of China. To find more efficient way to treat CGW, a serious of hybrid processes were reviewed in this study. Through this review we found that A2O combined with MBR (anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic membrane reactor) can effectively remove COD, total organic carbon, NH4+ -N, total phenols and total nitrogen (TN).
