In this work, the impact of granular activated carbon (GAC) on the mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion of chicken manure and the structure of microbial communities was investigated. These results demonstrated that GAC supplementation effectively enhanced the consumption of produced organic acids in the mesophilic and thermophilic batch tests, accompanied by faster biomethane production in the presence of GAC than from reactors without GAC. However, since the free ammonia level was 3–6 times higher in the thermophilic reactors, this led to the instability of the anaerobic digestion process of the nitrogen-rich substrate at thermophilic temperatures. Bacteroidia and Clostridia were the two main bacterial classes in the mesophilic reactors, whereas the class Clostridia had a competitive advantage over other groups in the thermophilic systems. The archaeal communities in the mesophilic reactors were mainly represented by representatives of the genera Methanosarcina, Methanobacterium, and Methanotrix, whereas the archaeal communities in the thermophilic reactors were mainly represented by members of the genera Methanosarcina, Methanoculleus, and Methanothermobacter. New data obtained in this research will help control and manage biogas reactors in the presence of GAC at different temperatures.

Neutralization with liquid digestate and CO2 was compared herein to adjust the pH of lime-treated corn stover. The effects on the thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic digestion were also analyzed. Liquid digestate neutralization (LDN) caused a decrease in pH from 10.5 to 7.5 in 60 h and accumulation of acetic/isobutyric acids. The CO2 neutralization (CN) under solid-state conditions reduced the pH from 10.5 to 8.5 in 30 min, which is faster than that of LDN and did not affect the subsequent anaerobic digestion. Biomethane production rate indicates that LDN contributed to the performance of anaerobic digestion, but this was not sufficient to compensate for the loss of total biomethane yield, resulting in a negative net profit (i.e., revenue from increased energy production minus reagent cost). For CN under solid-state conditions, the biomethane production was highest in both liquid- and solid-state anaerobic digestion, and also obtained a net profit of 98.74–100.89 RMB/tonne dry biomass. Therefore, the solid-state condition CN is a more efficient and economic method for adjusting initial pH of lime-treated corn stover.

This study investigated acid splitting wastewater (ASW) and interphase (IF) from soapstock splitting, as well as matter organic non glycerol (MONG) from glycerol processing, as potential substrates for biogas production. Batch and semicontinuous thermophilic anaerobic digestion experiments were conducted, and the substrates were preliminary treated using commercial enzymes kindly delivered by Novozymes A/C. The greatest enhancement in the batch digestion efficiency was achieved when three preparations; EversaTransform, NovoShape, and Lecitase were applied in the hydrolysis stage, which resulted in the maximum methane yields of 937 NL/kg VS and 915 NL/kg VS obtained from IF and MONG, respectively. The co-digestion of 68% ASW, 16% IF, and 16% MONG (wet weight basis) performed at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.5 kg VS/m3/day provided an average methane yield of 515 NLCH4/kg VSadded and a volatile solid reduction of nearly 95%. A relatively high concentration of sulfates in the feed did not significantly affect the digestion performance but resulted in an increased hydrogen sulfide concentration in the biogas with the peak of 4000 ppm.

Strain Kuro-4 was isolated as a novel member of the genus Gelria from a thermophilic anaerobic digestion reactor treating poly( l -lactic acid). Here, we report a 2,880,462-bp complete circular genome sequence of Kuro-4, with a G+C content of 61.9%. The chromosome harbors 2,831 protein-coding genes and 62 RNA-coding genes.
