Concentrations of selected trace elements in surface soils near crossroads in the city of Bratislava (the Slovak Republic)

A total of 65 uncultivated surface soils samples from the area surrounding the city of Kavala, Northern Greece, was collected and analyzed for their abundance in 22 trace elements. The extraction of the elements from the < 200μm soil fraction was based on the digestion of 0.1 g of each sample with 2 ml HNO3. The analytical methods used were ICP-OES and ICP-MS and the elements analyzed were Ag, As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Hg, Μη, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, Sr, Ti, V, W, and Zn. The chemistry of the surrounding rocks and mineralizations has mainly affected the trace elements contents of the surface soils samples. The average elemental concentrations of the 65 uncultivated surface soil samples were compared with the average values for normal soils of the USA. Arsenic, Pb, andZn were found to be enriched in the surface soils of the present study by a factor of 7.6, 3.3, and 2.7, respectively, indicating that human activities have contributed to their enrichment, since these elements are strongly connected to the industrial and agricultural activities in the area.

Cities are using smart city and eGovernment solutions as modern trends also to enhance the management of the city and to get the citizens and entrepreneurs more engaged. Cities in the Slovak Republic are thus introducing ICT based services in order to cope with legal state obligations and also as a natural decision based on specific needs of the municipality. eGovernment developed and introduced on the national level by the state, combined with eServices at the municipality level, mutually lead to a modern, smart and better functioning city. The article is focused on current Slovak Republic’s experiences in the field of eGovernment, more concretely on the provision of eServices in small municipalities, which make up the majority of the entire municipalities in the Slovak Republic.

The maximum, minimum, and mean values for six trace elements in four soil horizons are reported for 14 profiles of red-brown earths from South Australia, and the pattern of variation and distribution of these elements discussed. The elements studied could be arranged in a series of decreasing mobility in the soil, the order being cobalt > copper > gallium > vanadium > molybdenum > manganese. The most mobile elements had greater variations within profiles and, except for manganese, greater variations between profiles. Gallium, vanadium, and molybdenum contents were correlated with the amount of clay present in all surface soils, as well as in individual profiles, whereas cobalt and copper contents were correlated with clay only in individual profiles.

Urban soils are at the interface between land and people and provide a wide variety of important ecosystem services to highly populous areas. The aims of this soil survey were (1) to measure the bulk density, carbon (C) storage and pH of surface soils (0–15 cm depth) from public spaces (parks and road verges) in the city of Liverpool, UK, and (2) to determine the likely impact of these master variables on heavy metal concentrations (As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn). The bulk densities and organic matter contents varied considerably in the predominantly sandy textured soils within the city boundary, resulting in diverse C densities from 1–10 kg C m2. Organic carbon formed the majority of the labile, water-soluble and extractable C pool in these soils, a fact not easily elucidated from their organic matter or C content alone. The copper and lead concentrations in the sampled soils were correlated with organic matter and organic carbon in water-extracts. Cadmium and zinc appeared to be dependent only on soil pH, whilst arsenic was related positively to organic matter, but negatively to pH. Interrelationships, and hence synonymous distributions, of all metal(loid)s existed, but were strongest between Cu and As, and Cu and Pb. These results suggest that the diverse bulk densities, and hence carbon storage, of the urban soils surveyed influenced the dispersal of metals and arsenic.

Control of the trace element content in tap water is particularly important for large industrial regions. The estimation of Cd, Pb, Cu, As, Ni, Zn, Mn, Hg, Se and Co concentration in the tap water of Kryvyi Rih city (Karachuny Reservoir) was accomplished using electrochemical methods, the most popular methods for determining the content of trace elements in natural objects and tap water. A simple and rapid method to determine trace elements in the tap water (Kryvyi Rih city) by inversion-voltammetry has been used. The concentration of trace elements was measured by voltammetricanalyzer AVA-2 device that implements the method of inversion voltammetry on a solid rotating electrode made of carbon material. The monitoring of the trace element content in the water of the Karachuny reservoir was carried out on a monthly basis between September 2018 and August 2019. The article presents the obtained voltamperograms of some trace elements, describes content of the trace element in tap water during the year (12 data for each trace element) and analyzes the compliance of drinking water in the city of Kryvyi Rih to the standards and normative indicators of drinking water quality.
