AbstractIn the financial framework, the concepts of connectedness and diversification have been introduced and developed respectively in the context of systemic risk and portfolio theory. In this paper we propose a theoretical approach to bring to light the relation between connectedness and diversification. Starting from the respective axiomatic definitions, we prove that a class of proper measures of connectedness verifies, after a suitable functional transformation, the axiomatic requirements for a measure of diversification. The core idea of the paper is that connectedness and diversification are so deeply related that it is possible to pass from one concept to the other. In order to exploit such correspondence, we introduce a function, depending on the classical notion of rank of a matrix, that transforms a suitable proper measure of connectedness in a measure of diversification. We point out general properties of the proposed transformation function and apply it to a selection of measures of connectedness, such as the well-known Variance Inflation Factor.

<div> <div> <div> <p>In this paper, a new hypervolume-based evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithm (EMOA), namely R2HCA-EMOA (R2-based Hypervolume Contribution Approximation EMOA), is proposed for many-objective optimization. The core idea of the algorithm is to use an R2 indicator variant to approximate the hypervolume contribution. The basic framework of the proposed algorithm is the same as SMS- EMOA. In order to make the algorithm computationally efficient, a utility tensor structure is introduced for the calculation of the R2 indicator variant. Moreover, a normalization mechanism is incorporated into R2HCA-EMOA to enhance the performance of the algorithm. Through experimental studies, R2HCA-EMOA is compared with three hypervolume-based EMOAs and several other state-of-the-art EMOAs on 5-, 10- and 15-objective DTLZ, WFG problems and their minus versions. Our results show that R2HCA-EMOA is more efficient than the other hypervolume-based EMOAs, and is superior to all the compared state-of-the-art EMOAs. </p> </div> </div> </div>

Frege propounded a doctrine on which the distinction between object and concept has the form of a traditional distinction between categories: what can be said of the one cannot so much as be said of the other. This idea has been philosophically influential. It has inspired various doctrines on various supposed limits of making sense, the general thought being that when one tries to stand back too far from the phenomenon of thought itself, one gets involved in what might be issues of self-reference in a way that blocks saying anything at all. So much philosophy is saying nothing at all. Which might be true anyway. But the core idea rests on a mistake. It fails to take account of the relational and functional nature of the notion object.

Central pattern generators (CPGs) pace and pattern many rhythmic activities. We have uncovered a new module in the heartbeat CPG of leeches that creates a regional difference in this segmentally distributed motor pattern. The core CPG consists of seven identified pairs and one unidentified pair of heart interneurons of which 5 pairs are premotor and inhibit 16 pairs of heart motor neurons. The heartbeat CPG produces a side-to-side asymmetric pattern of activity of the premotor heart interneurons corresponding to an asymmetric fictive motor pattern and an asymmetric constriction pattern of the hearts with regular switches between the two sides. The premotor pattern progresses from rear to front on one side and nearly synchronously on the other; the motor pattern shows corresponding intersegmental coordination, but only from segment 15 forward. In the rearmost segments the fictive motor pattern and the constriction pattern progress from front to rear on both sides and converge in phase. Modeling studies suggested that the known inhibitory inputs to the rearmost heart motor neurons were insufficient to account for this activity. We therefore reexamined the constriction pattern of intact leeches. We also identified electrophysiologically two additional pairs of heart interneurons in the rear. These new heart interneurons make inhibitory connections with the rear heart motor neurons, are coordinated with the core heartbeat CPG, and are dye-coupled to their contralateral homologs. Their strong inhibitory connections with the rearmost heart motor neurons and the small side-to-side phase difference of their bursting contribute to the different motor and beating pattern observed in the animal's rear.

ShadowStream is a novel Internet live streaming system that integrates performance evaluation as an intrinsic capability. An essential component in ShadowStream is distributed lifecycle control mechanism, which assigns each client a virtual arrival/lifetime to create a particular scenario to evaluate the performance of streaming system. The original design focuses on utilizing stable streaming viewers in physical world to guarantee the accuracy of ShadowStream, which, on the other hand, significantly limits the scale of the experiment. The authors' research develops a novel distributed client lifecycle control to get rid of restrictions caused by the limited number of stable viewers in live-testing streaming networks. The core idea of their research is to match the desired experimental scenario with real viewers' behavior in physical world. The result demonstrates that with the authors' methodology, the scale of experiments can be doubled.

The article contains reflections on the problem which has arised in Eugene Matusov's article on freedom of education, and considers the experience of Mikhail Bakhtin as an example of the way the right to the freedom can be fulfilled. Not only Bakhtin's life and ideas play a significant role in contemporary social and educational theories and practices, but they reveal how education becomes a result of selection of particular knowledge and one's conscious choice. The core of the article is a correlation of notions “Education-for-myself” and “Education-for-the other” which are taken by the authors as derivatives of the terms of Bakhtin’s early philosophy “I-for-myself” and “I-for-the other”. Thus ideas of “Education-for-an individual” and “Education-for-the society” result from the reflections and can be evidence of the need in mutual understanding and dialogue in order to achieve freedom of education.

The first question to be answered, in seeking coordinate systems for geodynamics, is: what is geodynamics? The answer is, of course, that geodynamics is that part of geophysics which is concerned with movements of the Earth, as opposed to geostatics which is the physics of the stationary Earth. But as far as we know, there is no stationary Earth – epur sic monere. So geodynamics is actually coextensive with geophysics, and coordinate systems suitable for the one should be suitable for the other. At the present time, there are not many coordinate systems, if any, that can be identified with a static Earth. Certainly the only coordinate of aeronomic (atmospheric) interest is the height, and this is usually either as geodynamic height or as pressure. In oceanology, the most important coordinate is depth, and this, like heights in the atmosphere, is expressed as metric depth from mean sea level, as geodynamic depth, or as pressure. Only for the earth do we find “static” systems in use, ana even here there is real question as to whether the systems are dynamic or static. So it would seem that our answer to the question, of what kind, of coordinate systems are we seeking, must be that we are looking for the same systems as are used in geophysics, and these systems are dynamic in nature already – that is, their definition involvestime.

The original version of "the theory of economy management", developed in the 1920s by Russian economists-emigrants who called themselves "Eurasians" (N. Trubetskoy, P. Savitskiy, etc.) is analyzed in the article. They considered this theory to be the basis of the original Russia's way of economic development. The Eurasian theory of economy management focuses on two sides of enterprise activity: managerial as well as social and moral. The Eurasians accepted the Soviet economy with the large share of state regulation as the initial step of development. On the other hand they paid much attention to the private sector activity. Eurasians developed a theoretical model of the mixed economy which can be attributed as the Russian economic school.

Two aspects of Schumpeter' legacy are analyzed in the article. On the one hand, he can be viewed as the custodian of the neoclassical harvest supplementing to its stock of inherited knowledge. On the other hand, the innovative character of his works is emphasized that allows to consider him a proponent of hetherodoxy. It is stressed that Schumpeter's revolutionary challenge can lead to radical changes in modern economics.
