To make a better application of the self-excited oscillation jet, a compound organ–Helmholtz oscillation nozzle (OH nozzle) was designed to generate better pulse effects in the present study. The effects of geometric parameters on pressure characteristics of self-excited oscillation jets were investigated experimentally. The geometric parameters of OH nozzles were determined based on the design principle of the organ-pipe and Helmholtz nozzles. Various types of OH nozzles were tested to obtain the relationship between oscillation pressure and geometric parameters. Experimental results showed that some structural parameters are sensitive to the pump pressure, while others are not. The optimum geometric optimum parameters were obtained based on experimental results. The peak pressure and pressure pulsation amplitude are closely related to the target distance. The peak pressure decreases sharply with target distance at first and decreases with a further increase of the target distance. The peak pressure becomes stable beyond a certain range of target distance. With the increase of the target distance, the pressure pulsation amplitude increases at first and then decreases. The optimum target distance was determined based on experimental results to achieve better pulsation performance and has a value of 20 mm in the present study.

The article provides the main recommendations for studying the processes of cavitation development on the models of pumping units OPV-10-260 and V 20-13/45 with an impeller diameter Dr = 250 mm. The nature of the effect of cavitation depends on forms of pressure pulsation. The purpose of this work is to study abrasive-cavitation erosion of large pumps. The research objectives are to develop a methodology for calculating their operating modes, taking into account the minimum deterioration of working parts. Strongly developed cavitation leads to disruption of regular pulsations and an increase in the swing of the high-frequency component. Investigations of operating mode of pumps with deterioration of elements of flow section were carried out, and the characteristics of materials for the manufacture of hydromechanical equipment for resistance to cavitation deterioration were refined. According to experiments, the influence of pressure on the pressure fluctuation range begins to significantly affect if the pump pressure is less than 5 m. The nature of the effect of cavitation depends on the forms of pressure pulsation. The complexity of composition, high cost of high-alloy steels, and non-ferrous alloys make it irrational to use them in massive parts operating under cavitation-abrasive conditions. It is recommended to use the developed dependencies on machine water elevating systems to reduce deterioration by improving the quality of impeller materials.

Cavitation in pumps is the most severe condition that centrifugal pumps can work in and is leading to a loss in their performance.  Herein, the effect of semi-open centrifugal pump side clearance on the inception of pump cavitation has been investigated.  The input pump pressure has been changed from 80 to 16 kPa and the pump side clearance has been changed from 1 mm to 3 mm at a rotation speed of 1500 rpm. It has been shown that as the total input pressure decreased; the static pressure inside the impeller is reduced while the total pressure in streamwise direction has been reduced, also the pump head is constant with the reduction of the total input pressure until the cavitation is reached. Head is reduced due to cavitation inception; the head is reduced in the case of a closed impeller with a percent of 1.5% while it is reduced with a percent of 0.5% for pump side clearance of 1mm, both are at a pressure of 20 kPa.   Results also showed that the cavitation inception in the pump had been affected and delayed with the increase of the pump side clearance; the cavitation has been noticed to occur at approximate pressures of 20 kPa for side clearance of 1mm, 18 kPa for side clearances of 2mm and 16 kPa for 3mm.

The wear-ring abrasion can cause performance degradation of the marine centrifugal pump. In order to study the effect of front and back wear-ring clearance on a pump, test and numerical simulation were used to investigate the performance change of a pump. The test results show that the head and efficiency of pump decrease by 3.56% and 9.62% respectively at 1.0 Qd due to the wear-ring abrasion. Under 1.0 Qd, with the increase of the front wear-ring the vibration velocity at pump foot increases from 0.4 mm/s to 1.0 mm/s. The axis passing frequency (APF) at the measuring points increases significantly and there appears new characteristic frequency of 3APF and 4APF. The numerical simulation results show that the front wear-ring abrasion affects the flow at the inlet of the front chamber of the pump and impeller passage. And the back wear-ring abrasion has obvious effect on the flow in the back chamber of the pump and impeller passage, while the multi-malfunction of the front wear-ring abrasion and back wear-ring abrasion has the most obvious effect on the flow velocity and flow stability inside pump. The pressure pulsation at Blade Passing Frequency (BPF) of the three schemes all decrease with the increase of the clearance.

Designing environmental flows in lowland river sections and estuaries is a challenge for researchers and managers, given their complexity and their importance, both for nature conservation and economy. The Ebro River and its delta belong to a Mediterranean area with marked anthropogenic pressures. This study presents an assessment of the relationships between mean flows (discharges) computed at different time scales and (i) ecological quality based on fish populations in the lower Ebro, (ii) bird populations, and (iii) two shellfish fishery species of socioeconomic importance (prawn, or Penaeus kerathurus, and mantis shrimp, or Squilla mantis). Daily discharge data from 2000 to 2015 were used for analyses. Mean annual discharge was able to explain the variation in fish-based ecological quality, and model performance increased when aquatic vegetation was incorporated. Our results indicate that a good ecological status cannot be reached only through changes on discharge, and that habitat characteristics, such as the coverage of macrophytes, must be taken into account. In addition, among the different bird groups identified in our study area, predators were related to river discharge. This was likely due to its influence on available resources. Finally, prawn and mantis shrimp productivity were influenced up to a certain degree by discharge and physicochemical variables, as inputs from rivers constitute major sources of nutrients in oligotrophic environments such as the Mediterranean Sea. Such outcomes allowed revisiting the environmental flow regimes designed for the study area, which provides information for water management in this or in other similar Mediterranean zones.

The outlet conduit is an important construction connecting the outlet of the pump guide vane and the outlet pool; in order to study the hydraulic performance of the straight outlet conduit of the axial-flow pump device, this paper adopts the method of numerical simulation and analyzes the influence of the division pier on the pressure and velocity distribution inside and near the wall of the straight outlet conduit based on three design schemes. Four pressure pulsation measuring points were arranged in the straight outlet conduit, and the low-frequency pulsation characteristic information inside the straight outlet conduit with and without the division pier was extracted by wavelet packet reconstruction. The results show that the addition of a division pier has an effect on the hydraulic loss, near-wall pressure and velocity distribution in the straight outlet conduit. A small high-pressure zone is formed near the wall at the starting position of the division pier, and a large high-speed zone is formed on the left side at the starting position of the division pier. The length of the division pier has no significant effect on the flow distribution of the straight outlet conduit and the pressure and velocity distribution near the wall. Under different working conditions, each monitoring point has the maximum energy in the sub-band (0~31.25 Hz). With the increase of the flow rate, the total pressure energy of the straight outlet conduit decreases gradually. Under each condition, the difference of the energy proportion of the horizontal monitoring points of the straight outlet conduit is small, and the difference of the energy proportion of the two monitoring points at the top and bottom of the outlet channel is relatively large. The energy of the two monitoring points in the straight outlet conduit with a division pier is smaller than that of the two monitoring points in the straight outlet conduit without a division pier. There are differences in the main frequency and the power spectrum corresponding to the main frequency of the monitoring points in the straight outlet conduit, and the reasonable setting of the division pier is conducive to reducing the pressure pulsation of the flow in the straight outlet conduit and is beneficial to the safe and stable operation of the pump device.
