There is a growing literature on wellness for law in Australia and elsewhere. Significant uncertainty exists, however, about what exactly wellness means in this context. I argue that wellness is not best understood either as the absence of psychological distress or as the presence of life satisfaction or positive affect. I propose an alternative understanding of wellness that centres around the role of basic values in human flourishing. Wellness, I suggest, consists in participating in the various dimensions of human flourishing in a balanced and integrated way. This approach draws out the deep challenges that wellness poses to legal education and practice.

This study aims to analyze the relationships between gender, age, positive (self-esteem, life satisfaction) and negative/distress psychological variables (anxiety, depression, stress), and subjective happiness. A total of 910 adolescents (51.0% girls, mean age of 13.89 years) answered measures of subjective happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and stress. Girls showed lower life satisfaction and self-esteem and greater distress symptoms than boys. Older age was associated with lower subjective happiness, life satisfaction, and self-esteem and greater distress symptoms. Being girl, younger, having lower levels of depressive symptoms, and higher levels of life satisfaction and self-esteem were associated with greater subjective happiness. Self-esteem was a moderator between depressive symptoms and subjective happiness, and stress and subjective happiness. Life satisfaction was a moderator between depression and subjective happiness. Results highlight the role of life satisfaction and self-esteem as a positive functioning dimension for adolescents to manage, regulate, or minimize their psychological distress and to build higher levels of subjective happiness as a source of positive mental health.

Changes in the workforce demographics have led many individuals, particularly women, to experience work-family conflict as they juggle between their work and family roles. However, not much is known about the role of work-family conflict in the relationship between positive personality traits, namely, core self-evaluations and psychological health, among nurses. Thus, this study presents a model which examines the impact of core self-evaluations on nurses’ psychological health (i.e., psychological distress and life satisfaction) and whether work-family conflict will have a mediating influence on such relationship. Based on the ecological systems theory and the conservation of resources theory, the model proposes that core self-evaluations will have a direct effect on work-family conflict, life satisfaction and psychological distress in nurses. In addition, it is hypothesised that core self-evaluations will have an indirect effect on life satisfaction and psychological distress through work-family conflict. Finally, this model highlights the importance of core self-evaluations as personal resources that can protect nurses from work-family conflict and enhance their psychological health.

Abstract. The current study investigated the associations of psychological resources, social comparisons, and temporal comparisons with general wellbeing. The sample included 142 community participants (47.9% men; age range 23–83 years), who compared themselves with others, and with their younger selves, on eight dimensions (e.g., physical health, resilience). They also completed questionnaires assessing psychological resources of mastery and self-esteem, and three components of subjective wellbeing: life satisfaction and negative and positive affect. The main results showed that high levels of psychological resources contributed to wellbeing, with self-enhancing social and temporal comparisons moderating the effects of resources on certain wellbeing components. Specifically, under low levels of mastery or self-esteem self-enhancing social or temporal comparisons were related to either higher life satisfaction or positive affect. The results highlight the role of resources and comparisons in promoting people’s wellbeing, and suggest that self-enhancing comparisons function as cognitive coping mechanisms when psychological resources are low.
