Abstract Properties of shale in an acid environment are important when acid or CO2 is injected into geologic formations as a working fluid for enhanced oil and gas recovery, hydraulic fracturing and reduced fracture initiation pressure. It has previously been shown that acid fluids can enhance the formation conductivity and decrease the hardness of shale. However, less is known about the effect of dilute acid on the adhesion properties of shale. In the study, shale samples are characterized in detail with advanced analysis. Adhesion properties of shale via dilute acid treatment were revealed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) for the first time. Results indicate that acid treatment can greatly enhance adhesion forces of the shale surface. After acid treatment, the average adhesion forces show a platform-like growth with an increase in loading force. Through analysis of results from AFM, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, we affirm that the enhanced adhesion forces are mainly from increased specific surface area and reduced elastic modulus. The results presented in this work help understand the adhesion properties of shale oil/gas present in an acidic environment, which have great significance in unconventional resources development.

Unconventional oil and gas are important resources of future energy supply, and shale gas is the focus of the development of unconventional resources. Shale is a special kind rock of porous medium, and an orderly structure of beddings aligned in the horizontal direction where causing the strong elastic anisotropy of shale is easy. A new model has been established to calculate the fracture initiation pressure with the consideration of mechanical characteristics of shale and the anisotropic tensile strength when judging rock failure. The fracture initiation model established in this paper accurately reflects the stress anisotropy and matches well with the actual situation in porous media. Through the sensitivity analysis, the results show that σv/σH, Ev/EH, υv/υH, m/s, and A/B have a certain impact on the tangential stress when the circumferential angle changes, and there is a positive relationship between the initiation pressure and the above sensitive factors except for A/B. The results can provide a valuable and effective guidance for the prediction of fracture initiation pressure and fracture propagation mechanism under special stratum conditions of shale.

Abstract The 2014 Wood Review is a report reviewing UK offshore oil and gas recovery and its regulation, led by Sir Ian Wood. The report identifies and addresses key challenges in the UK petroleum industry, among them the lack of a strong regulatory body and a decommissioning strategy. The UK petroleum industry is mature, and Norway may benefit from UK's experiences in decommissioning. The article investigates the applicability of the Wood Review recommendations for decommissioning in Norway. The analysis of the recommendations in the Wood Review is carried out by a SWOT-analysis of the general recommendations with a high potential impact on decommissioning as well as the five recommendations specific to decommissioning. The recommendations in the Wood Review were broadly accepted by UK authorities and formed the basis for numerous initiatives aimed at improving policies and practices in UK decommissioning. The key initiatives are presented to illustrate how the Wood Review recommendations has been interpreted. A summary of the key differences between the petroleum industries and the regulatory authorities in Norway and the UK is provided for background. Decommissioning in Norway face similar challenges to those identified in the Wood Review. The analysis indicates that several of the UK initiatives following the recommendations in the Wood Review has the potential of improving decommissioning in Norway. Differences in regulatory regimes between the regions may complicate the implementation of some of the initiatives following the Wood Review in Norway. In most cases only minor changes to regulations and/or practices are required. Recent UK initiatives with a high impact on decommissioning include increased focus on sharing of information and lessons learned, increased collaboration, the development of a decommissioning strategy, benchmarking of decommissioning cost estimates for all projects and the development and publishing of annual UK decommissioning cost estimates. There are indications that the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) and the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (MPE) are falling behind their UK counterparts in key areas. Norway has limited experience with decommissioning, and scrupulous analysis of lessons learned in other regions is essential. Decommissioning of Norwegian offshore infrastructure is a major undertaking and even minor improvements may have a substantial impact on personnel risk, risk to the environment or the total decommissioning expenditure. The Norwegian regulatory regime has been an integral part of the Norwegian petroleum industry's success in previous decades, and changes to the regime require careful deliberation. The recent implementation of initiatives aimed at improving decommissioning regulations and practices in the UK represents a unique learning opportunity for Norwegian authorities. The analysis suggest that Norway may benefit from adopting some of the UK initiatives following the Wood Review recommendations.

This article analyzes the prospects of petroleum potential in Kurgan region. The relevance of the work is due to the high degree of development of the traditional oil and gas recovery areas of Western Siberia, which leads to the need to organize search activities in areas with a low density of hydrocarbon resources. We have analyzed the results of exploratory drilling in the area of the Alabuga river in Kurgan region, and have studied the history of detections of onshore oil occurrences there. Based on the results of the retrospective analysis, the research area was determined, field work was performed to determine the state of search wells in the area, and a collection of geochemical soil and liquid samples was selected. The analysis of the samples revealed that all of them contain methane and its homologues up to and including pentane. The genesis of light methane homologs is related to the processes of catagenesis; their detection on the surface indicates active processes of generation and migration of petroleum hydrocarbons. Based on the analysis of archival materials and estimated ground-based geochemical studies, a conclusion is made about petroleum potential in Kurgan region.
