Magnesium-Calcium (Mg-Ca) alloy is an emerging metallic biomaterial for manufacturing biodegradable orthopedic implants. However, very few studies have been conducted on mechanical properties of the bi-phase Mg-Ca alloy, especially at the high strain rates often encountered in manufacturing processes. The mechanical properties are critical to design and manufacturing of Mg-Ca implants. The objective of this study is to study the microstructural and mechanical properties of Mg-Ca0.8 (wt %) alloy. Both elastic and plastic behaviors of the Mg-Ca0.8 alloy were characterized at different strains and strain rates in quasi-static tension and compression testing as well as dynamic split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) testing. It has been shown that Young’s modulus of Mg-Ca0.8 alloy in quasi-static compression is much higher than those at high strain rates. Yield strength and ultimate strength of the material are very sensitive to strain rates and increase with strain rate in compression. Strain softening also occurs at large strains in dynamic compression. Furthermore, quasi-static mechanical behavior of the material in tension is very different from that in compression. The stress-strain data was repeatable with reasonable accuracy in both deformation modes. In addition, a set of material constants for the internal state variable plasticity model has been obtained to model the dynamical mechanical behavior of the novel metallic biomaterial.

The dynamic compression experiments of reinforced concrete are carried out by one-stage light gas gun apparatus which subjects the reinforced concrete to deformation at strain rates of the order of 104/s with confining pressures of 1~1.5GPa. The stress-strain curves of reinforced concrete with different impact velocities are obtained using Lagrangian analysis method. Experimental results indicate that reinforced concrete is non-linear, rate-sensitive and pressure-dependent.

Carbon-like materials such as the anode and the ramming paste play a crucial role in the efficiency of the Hall–Héroult process. The mechanical behavior of these materials during forming processes is complex and still ill-understood. This work aimed to investigate experimentally the mechanical behavior of a carbon paste used in the aluminum industry under different loading conditions. For this purpose, experiments consisting of (1) relaxation tests at different compaction levels, (2) quasi-static cyclic tests at several amplitudes, (3) monotonic compaction tests at varied strain rates, and (4) vibrocompaction tests at different frequencies were carried out. The obtained results highlight some fundamental aspects of the carbon paste behavior such as the strain rate’s effect on the paste compressibility, the hardening-softening behavior under cyclic loadings, the effect of cycling amplitude on the stress state and the paste densification, and the frequency effect on the vibrocompaction process. These results pave the way for the development of reliable rheological models for the modeling and the numerical simulation of carbon pastes forming processes.

Abstract Cast iron alloys with low production cost and quite good mechanical properties are widely used in the automotive industry. To study the mechanical behavior of a typical ductile cast iron (GJS-450) with nodular graphite, uni-axial quasi-static and dynamic tensile tests at strain rates of 10− 4, 1, 10, 100, and 250 s− 1 were carried out. In order to investigate the effects of stress state, specimens with various geometries were used in the experiments. Stress–strain curves and fracture strains of the GJS-450 alloy in the strain-rate range of 10− 4 to 250 s− 1 were obtained. A strain rate-dependent plastic flow law based on the Voce model is proposed to describe the mechanical behavior in the corresponding strain-rate range. The deformation behavior at various strain rates is observed and analyzed through simulations with the proposed strain rate-dependent constitutive model. The available damage model from Bai and Wierzbicki is extended to take the strain rate into account and calibrated based on the analysis of local fracture strains. The validity of the proposed constitutive model including the damage model was verified by the corresponding experimental results. The results show that the strain rate has obviously nonlinear effects on the yield stress and fracture strain of GJS-450 alloys. The predictions with the proposed constitutive model and damage models at various strain rates agree well with the experimental results, which illustrates that the rate-dependent flow rule and damage models can be used to describe the mechanical behavior of cast iron alloys at elevated strain rates.

The effect of the strain rate on the mechanical behavior and the damage of adhesively bonded joints is one of the most important factors to consider in designing them. Vast research has been carried out on the dynamic behaviour of adhesives at different strain rates; however, the investigation about the dynamic behaviour of the adhesively bonded joints is limited. In this paper, the main objective is to study and assess the effect of the strain rate on the out-of-plane mechanical behaviour of adhesively bonded joints under dynamic compression using Hopkinson bars. These joints are studied using glass/vinylester composite materials which are commonly used in naval applications. The experimantal results have shown a strong material sensitivity to strain rates. Moreover, damage investigations have revealed that the failure mainly occurred in the adhesive/adherent interface because of the brittle nature of the polymeric adhesive. Results have shown good agreement with the dependency of the dynamic parameters on strain rates.
