In recent years, together with the boom of the industrial revolution 4.0, terms such as artificial intelligence (AI) are gradually gaining popularity engineering domain. This study proposed a number of AI models for predicting the axial strength in circular steel tube confined concrete (STCC) columns. Particularly, artificial neural networks (ANNs), support vector regression (SVR), linear regression (LR), and M5P were applied in this study. This study applied 136 samples of short and intermediate STCC columns infilled with normal strength concrete, high strength concrete, or ultimate high strength concrete to evaluate the AI models. Compressive strengths of concrete cylinders was ranged from 23.20 Mpa to 188.10 Mpa. The AI models were assessed by statistical indexes including MAPE, MAE, RMSE, and R. The analytical results revealed that the M5P the most effective AI model comparing to others. Comparing with the other models, predicted data obtained by the M5P model show the highest agreement with the actual data in predicting the axial strength of STCC columns. Particularly, the MAPE and R of M5P models were 10.62% and 0.977 respectively. Similarly, the RMSE by the M5P model was 330.38 kN which is the lowest value among 419.39 kN by the LR model, 337.84 kN by the ANNs model, and 857.11 kN by the SVR model. Therefore, the M5P model can be considered as a useful tool to accurately predict the compressive capacity of the STCC columns. Keywords: artificial intelligence; circular steel tube confined concrete columns; axial strength; support vector regression.

Fire and post-fire behaviours of reinforced concrete columns confined by circular steel tubes, also known as circular steel tube confined reinforced concrete (STCRC) columns, are investigated in this paper. 5 full-scale specimens exposed to fire and 47 specimens after fire exposure were tested. Temperatures across the sections, displacement versus time curves, fire resistance, load versus displacement responses and load-bearing capacities were measured and discussed. A finite element (FE) model was developed using the program ABAQUS, and validated against the test results from the present study. Simplified design methods were proposed for predicting the fire resistance and residual load-bearing capacity of the STCRC columns under and after fire exposure, respectively.

The improvement of the load carrying capacity of concrete columns under a triaxial compressive stress results from the strain restriction. Under a triaxial stress state, the capacity of the deformation of concrete is greatly decreased with the increase of the side compression. Therefore, confining the deformation in the lateral orientation is an effective way to improve the strength and ductility of concrete columns. This paper carried out an experimental investigation on axially loaded normal strength concrete columns confined by 10 different types of materials, including steel tube, glass fiber confined steel tube (GFRP), PVC tube, carbon fiber confined PVC tube (CFRP), glass fiber confined PVC tube (GFRP), CFRP, GFRP, polyethylene (PE), PE hybrid CFRP and PE hybrid GFRP. The deformation, macroscopical deformation characters, failure mechanism and failure modes are studied in this paper. The ultimate bearing capacity of these 10 types of confined concrete columns and the influences of the confining materials on the ultimate bearing capacity are obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of these 10 types of confining methods are compared.

Two 1/6 scale core walls, including one RC core wall with steel tube-reinforced concrete columns and concealed steel trusses and one conventional RC core wall, were tested under eccentric horizontal cyclic loading. The load-capacity, ductility, hysteresis characteristics, stiffness, stiffness deterioration process, energy dissipation and damage characteristics of the two specimens were compared and discussed in this paper. It shows that the seismic performance of the RC core walls under combined action could be improved by setting the concealed steel trusses in the walls and using the steel tube-reinforced concrete columns as the boundary elements.
