Optimizing Stocking Density of Labeo rohita Fry in Cage Aquaculture System as a Tool for Floodplain Wetland Fisheries Management

The striped dwarf catfish Mystus cavasius being a least concern small indigenous fish it is necessary to protect the species from extinction in the near future. An experiment on production and economic feasibility of Mystus cavasius in cage was conducted for a period of six months from March to August 2020 in beel hilla at Naogaon district of Bangladesh. The study was carried out in nine cages (rectangular 8x5x2 feet size) under three treatments namely T1, T2 and T3 performed with the stocking densities of 46 fry m-2, 92 fry m-2 and 137 fry m-2 and designed each with three replications. The fish was fed with commercial pellet feed (containing 30% crude protein) twice daily at the rate of 5-7% of fish body weight. The total production was found to be significantly (p<0.05) highest in T3 among the three treatments. The net profit was better in T3 than T1 and T2 in terms of better production and money. So, stocking density of Mystus cavasius at the rate of 137 fry m-2 in cage could be an economically feasible aquaculture technique for fish farmers.

The study was conducted to assess the growth and production of Thai sarpunti (Puntius gonionotus), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and rui (Labeo rohita) under monoculture and polyculture systems in seasonal waterbodies of haor environment. Selected waterbodies were divided into three treatments as T1 (sarpunti), T2 (sarpunti+tilapia) and T3 (sarpunti+tilapia+rui). Each treatment had three replicates and same stocking density (40,000 ha-1) of fishes was maintained in all treatments. Stocked fishes were fed with rice bran and wheat flour as supplemental feed at a decreasing rate of 10-5% of total biomass for twice daily. The highest final weight of sarpunti (122.32 g), tilapia (102.58 g) and rui (140.0 g) was obtained in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. Significantly higher production of sarpunti was secured in T1 (3,446.13 kg ha-1) than T2 (2,942.6 kg ha-1) and T3 (2,804.1 kg ha-1), and tilapia production was better in T2 (2,786.07 kg ha-1) than T3 (2,172.52 kg ha-1). Combined production of sarpunti, tilapia and rui was significantly (p<0.05) higher in T3 (8,341.41 kg ha-1) followed by T2 (5,728.67 kg ha-1) and T1 (3,446.13 kg ha-1). Therefore, polyculture practice of sarpunti, tilapia and rui may be suggested to disseminate at farmers’ level for boost up fish production.

Experiment was conducted to evaluate the high density culture of Mystus cavasius and its effects on growth performances, survival rate and proximate composition of the fish in recirculating aquaculture system. Fishes were cultured at 571, 714, 857 and 1000 fries/m3 as the initial stocking density. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found in specific growth rate, average daily gain, food conversation ratio, protein efficiency ratio, condition factor (k) and survival rate (%) of fish under the culture period of 120 days among the different stocking densities. The average survival rate was ≥ 99% among the treatments at the end of the culture period. The moisture contents were between 77.10 and 77.75%, ash content was 2.58 and 2.61%, crude protein was 15.86 and 16.07%, crude lipid was 5.45 and 5.68% with no significant differences (p > 0.05) among the treatments. There were no significant variations in DO, TAN, NO3-N, NO2-N and pH among the treatments during culture. This study showed that stocking density of at least 1000 fries/m3 was the best option as the total gain was highest compared to other lower densities under similar facilities. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. Potentials and prospects of pond fish farming in improving aquaculture system in Kaliakair upazila under Gazipur district, Bangladesh were investigated. Data were collected from 60 selected fish farmers through questionnaire survey and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) during June to November, 2014. The research revealed that a highest number of pond fish farmers (61.67%) were out of training facilities and a good portion (23.33%) had no education. Pond water was found turbid seasonally (71.66%) and farmers did not exchange water during culture periods (66.67%). As a result water quality deteriorates day by day and depletion of oxygen occurs during pond farming. The average stocking density of fish was higher in the study area and the highest was found in monoculture of Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus ) (1200 individual/decimal) and lowest in carp polyculture system (195 individual/decimal). Fish production was higher in Pangus monoculture system (17.89 MT/ha/yr) and lower in Climbing perch monoculture system (10.78 MT/ha/yr), but profit was higher in Climbing perch monoculture produced 1318100 Tk./ha/yr and lower in Tilapia monoculture 397886 Tk./ha/yr. Benefit Cost Ratio was higher in Climbing perch (2.32) and lower in Pangus culture (1.34). The problems faced by the fish farmers were broadly categorized as financial, natural, technical and social. Therefore, necessary training facilities with institutional and organizational supports, credit facilities, extension services and awareness development are essential to improve aquaculture system as well as the fishers’ livelihoods in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district.Res. The efficacy and suitability of dietary whole wheat flour supplementation was evaluated on the growth performance and survival of rohu (Labeo rohita). The study was conducted in 12 experimental aquaria at the Wet Laboratory, Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. A total of 180 fingerlings of mean initial weight of 1.744±00 g were stocked at the same stocking density (268 fingerlings/m3). Four different treatments (T1, T2, T3 and T4) each with three replications were performed having different level of whole wheat flour such as 0% whole wheat flour (T1), 5% whole wheat flour (T2), 10% whole wheat flour (T3) and 15% whole wheat flour (T4). Feeds were supplied at 5% body weight twice daily in the morning at 9.00 am and in the afternoon at 5.00 pm throughout the study period. The rations were adjusted every week when new weights of the fish for various experimental aquariums were determined. At the end of the 63 days study period, the growth performance parameters such as mean final weight (g), weight gain (g), percent weight gain (%), specific growth rate (%/day) and the best feed utilization in terms of food conversion ratio were found highest at treatment 4 where fishes were fed with inclusion of 15% whole wheat flour and lowest was found at treatment 1 (fed with inclusion of 0% whole wheat flour). Water quality parameters were within the acceptable range and survival rate was found 100% in all treatment. Therefore, it can be concluded that treatment 4 (highest growth performance and survival rate of L. rohita with supplementation of 15% whole wheat flour containing diet) can be chosen by fish farmers for commercial culture of this species.
