Abstract A 16-year-old female with psoriasis was admitted to our Plastic Surgery department with a significant chemical burn to the neck, upper torso, and left cheek (TBSA 6%). She applied a concoction of cream prescribed by her dermatologist in her native country, Poland when she returned to the United Kingdom. A few hours after application she developed a burn with pH of 5. A review of the cream revealed a mixture of 19% Dithranol and 5% Salicylic acid. This combination is recognized for managing psoriasis, however the strength of dithranol in the combination given is of a high concentration (normally <3%). This alone can cause a burn to the skin if left for a prolonged period of time. Salicylic acid is an enhancer which augments the stability of dithranol and increases its penetration and efficacy. The concentration of 5% is also on the higher end. Our patient was admitted for pain relief and further irrigation till normalization of the pH which was achieved after 3 days. A worrying aspect in our patients’ case is that she was given the cream to commence at home. High concentration preparation is normally commenced in a controlled setting under medical supervision.

Mupirocin ointment is a topical antibiotic approved and used for the treatment of cutaneous infections. Despite some side effects, mupirocin has been reported to be safe and to cause allergic reactions in only extremely rare cases. A 41-year-old male patient visited our hospital after suffering a chemical burn on his left elbow. Mupirocin ointment and a foam dressing were applied daily. After the mupirocin treatment, an exfoliative skin lesion and bullae appeared and quickly spread to the entire left upper extremity. Our clinical diagnosis of this rare case was severe allergic contact dermatitis caused by the mupirocin ointment. Application of mupirocin was terminated, and the spread of aggravated erosive cutaneous lesion was treated with normal saline and wet-gauze dressing, after which most of the erosive lesion started to heal. After 2 more weeks, there was full epithelization and the wound healed completely. This paper is a report on a rare case of severe allergic contact dermatitis resulting from treatment with mupirocin ointment.

Electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDXA) are found to be very useful tools for identification of etiologic agents in pneumoconiosis or interstitial pulmonary disorders. Pulmonary interstitial fibrosis and granulomatosis are frequently associated with occupational and environmental pollution. Numerous reports of pneumoconiosis in various occupations such as coal and gold miners are presented in the literature. However, there is no known documented case of pulmonary changes in workers in the sandpaper industry. This study reports a rare case of pulmonary granulomatosis containing deposits from abrasives of sandpaper diagnosed by using EDXA.

Potassium permanganate has been used as a fixative for the botanical specimen and membrane system in thin section by Glauert (1975). A new potassium permanganate fixative ( Trisodium citrate 60mM, Potassium chloride 25mM, Magnesium chloride 35mM, and Potassium permanganate 125mM ) for localizing membranous system in whole_mount cultured cells with standard trasmission electron microscopy and phase_contrast microscopy has been developed). Here, we report that using this new potassium permanganate fixative for membranous system in sections.Cultured cells, CV_1 (African green monkey kidney epithelial cells), Balb/c 3T3 ( Mouse embryo fibroblast ) and MCF_7 (Human adenocarcinoma cell line) were used for this study. All cells were grown on 35mm plastic dishes in DME medium containing 5% calf serum at 37 c with 100% humidity and 5% CO2. Using the potassium permanganate fixative to fix the cells for about 7 minutes. After fixation, the cells were dehydrated in a graded series of ethanol.

Despite its rapidly growing use in commercial applications, the morphology of LLDPE and its blends has not been thoroughly studied by microscopy techniques. As part of a study to examine the morphology of a LLDPE narrow fraction and its blends with HDPE via SEM, TEM and AFM, an appropriate etchant is required. However, no satisfactory recipes could be found in the literature. Mirabella used n-heptane, a solvent for LLDPE, as an etchant to reveal certain morphological features in the SEM, including faint banding in spherulites. A 1992 paper by Bassett included a TEM micrograph of an axialite of LLDPE, etched in a potassium permanganate solution, but no details were given.Attempts to use n-heptane, at 60°C, as an etchant were unsuccessful: depending upon thickness, samples swelled and increased in diameter by 5-10% or more within 15 minutes. Attempts to use the standard 3.5% potassium permanganate solution for HDPE were also unsuccessful: the LLDPE was severely overetched. Weaker solutions were also too severe.
