AbstractZnS has great potentials as an anode for lithium storage because of its high theoretical capacity and resource abundance; however, the large volume expansion accompanied with structural collapse and low conductivity of ZnS cause severe capacity fading and inferior rate capability during lithium storage. Herein, 0D-2D ZnS nanodots/Ti3C2Tx MXene hybrids are prepared by anchoring ZnS nanodots on Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets through coordination modulation between MXene and MOF precursor (ZIF-8) followed with sulfidation. The MXene substrate coupled with the ZnS nanodots can synergistically accommodate volume variation of ZnS over charge–discharge to realize stable cyclability. As revealed by XPS characterizations and DFT calculations, the strong interfacial interaction between ZnS nanodots and MXene nanosheets can boost fast electron/lithium-ion transfer to achieve excellent electrochemical activity and kinetics for lithium storage. Thereby, the as-prepared ZnS nanodots/MXene hybrid exhibits a high capacity of 726.8 mAh g−1 at 30 mA g−1, superior cyclic stability (462.8 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1), and excellent rate performance. The present results provide new insights into the understanding of the lithium storage mechanism of ZnS and the revealing of the effects of interfacial interaction on lithium storage performance enhancement.

Due to the ever-growing demand for high-density energy storage devices, lithium-ion batteries with a high-capacity cathode and anode are thought to be the next-generation batteries for their high energy density. Lithium sulfide (Li2S) is considered the promising cathode material for its high theoretical capacity, high melting point, affordable volume expansion, and lithium composition. This review summarizes the activation and lithium storage mechanism of Li2S cathodes. The design strategies in improving the electrochemical performance are highlighted. The application of the Li2S cathode in full cells of lithium-ion batteries is discussed. The challenges and new directions in commercial applications of Li2S cathodes are also pointed out.

In order to overcome the poor electrical conductivity of titania (TiO2) and silica (SiO2) anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), we herein report a facile preparation of integrated titania–silica–carbon (TSC) nanofibers via electrospinning and subsequent heat-treatment. Both titania and silica are successfully embedded into the conductive N-doped carbon nanofibers, and they synergistically reinforce the overall strength of the TSC nanofibers after annealing (Note that titania–carbon or silica–carbon nanofibers cannot be obtained under the same condition). When applied as an anode for LIBs, the TSC nanofiber electrode shows superior cycle stability (502 mAh/g at 100 mA/g after 300 cycles) and high rate capability (572, 518, 421, 334, and 232 mAh/g each after 10 cycles at 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 mA/g, respectively). Our results demonstrate that integration of titania/silica into N-doped carbon nanofibers greatly enhances the electrode conductivity and the overall structural stability of the TSC nanofibers upon repeated lithiation/delithiation cycling.

Manganese monoxide (MnO) is a promising anode material in the lithium-ion battery for its high capacity, low operation potential, and environmental benignity. However, its application is impeded by poor rate capability and rapid capacity fading. In this work, a MnO/carbon hybrid material, in which small-sized MnO nanoparticles are tightly anchored on carbon fibers (denoted as MnO@CFs), was prepared by annealing the electrospun precursor fibers at 650 °C. When applied as the anode material of the Li-ion battery, the small size of MnO shortens the Li-ion diffusion path, and the carbon fibers not only greatly improve the conductivity but also efficiently buffer the MnO structure strain during the charge–discharge process, endowing the MnO@CFs electrode with a good rate capability (185 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1) and cyclic stability (406 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 1.0 A g−1).
