In accordance with the object-oriented programming, a system for 3D medical images of reconstruction and display has been designed and implemented. The overall software structure is established based on VC++6.0 and display technique of Open Graphics Library. The functional modules, such as acquisition of encoded 3D data, pre-process, reconstruction and display, are achieved by the design and implementation of customized classes. At last the software system provides user-friendly graphical user interfaces, highly efficient data processing and reconstruction, and rapid capability of graphic display.

Computer simulation has been successfully implemented in the area of construction management. However, this success has generally been limited to the academic arena with the industry lagging far behind. This failure is partly due to the inherent complexity of general simulators and their inability to abstract the underlying modeling fundamentals. Special purpose simulation (SPS) is a framework developed to address the stated drawbacks by focusing on the needs of the construction practitioner. The idea is to build modeling environments tailored to the specific requirements of a given industry domain. This paper presents the development and implementation of a construction dewatering analysis framework based on the ideas of SPS. Object-oriented design and graphical user interfaces are used in the development of an abstraction layer between a steady state hydrological model and the user. The integration capability of the framework are then presented by constructing an optimization module and linking it to the main modeling environment. A case study is provided to demonstrate the usefulness, intuitiveness, and validity of the framework.Key words: simulation, special purpose simulation, construction dewatering, optimization, computer applications.

AbstractSoftware design patterns incarnate expert knowledge distilled from the practical experience in object-oriented design, in a compact and reusable form. The article presents a quantitative study of the usability of the object-oriented software design patterns (known as Gang of Four patterns) applied for improving the testability, maintainability, extendibility, readability, reliability, and performance efficiency of software applications. We received 82 usable responses from software professionals in Bulgaria, with 65 of them addressing both the usability and recognition of each one of the Gang of Four patterns, together with their impact on important software quality characteristics. As well, we studied the approach of each software developer in choosing a particular design pattern to use in order to solve a problem. We found statistically significant differences between the most recognized and most useful patterns and between the most unrecognized and most useless patterns, split into creational, structural, and behavioral groups.

It has been a long time since the object-oriented (OO) paradigm appeared. From that moment, designers have accumulated much knowledge in design and construction of OO systems. Patterns are the most refined OO design knowledge. However, there are many others kinds of knowledge than are not yet classified and formalized. Therefore, we feel it necessary to define ontology in order to structure and unify such knowledge; a good understanding of practical experience is crucial to software engineers. Therefore, this chapter proposes an ontology for object-oriented design knowledge.
