Abstract New complexes of Cu(I,II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) of thiosemicarbazide ligand 1-(p-(methylanilinocetyl-4-phenyl-thiosemicarbazide)(H2LB) have been prepared and characterized by 1HNMR, Mass spectra, FT-IR, elemental analyses, molar conductance, UV-visible spectra, magnetic susceptibility measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG) and X-ray diffraction pattern before and after irradiation. The results confirmed that gamma ray enhanced the stability of irradiated compounds as compared to non-irradiated compounds. XRD patterns proved that increasing the crystallinity of the samples and the particles in nano range after gamma irradiation. The obtained data indicated that the Cu(I) and Cd(II) ions coordinated to the ligand through the (C = O), N(2)H and (C = S), the ligand behaves as neutral tridentate. While in complexes Cu(II) and Zn(II)complexes (B2 and B3) the ligand behave as neutral tetradentate and coordination take place via (C = O) and two N(2)H. These studies revealed that, two kinds of stereochemical geometries; Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were predicted to be octahedral, Cu(I) and Cd(II)complexes were found to be tetrahedral. The theoretical conformational structure analyses were performed using density functional theory for ligand and complexes at B3LYP functional with 6-31G(++)d,p basis set for ligand and LANL2DZ basis set for complexes. The ligand and its metal complexes have been tested for their inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria against gram-positive (Streptococcus pyogenes) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli). Results suggested that in case of 1µg/ml and 5µg/ml for Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes have higher activity than other complexes. The chelation could facilitate the ability to cross the cell membrane of E. coli and can be explained by Tweedy’s chelation theory. Molecular docking investigation proved that; the Zn(II) complex had interesting interactions with active site amino acids of topoisomerase II DNA gyrase enzymes (code: 2XCT).

Providing safe water to >1 billion people in need is a major challenge. To address this need, the Safe Water System (SWS) - household water treatment with dilute bleach, safe water storage, and behavior change - has been implemented in >20 countries. To assess the potential sustainability of the SWS, we analyzed costs in Zambia of “Clorin” brand product sold in bottles sufficient for a month of water treatment at a price of $0.09. We analyzed production, marketing, distribution, and overhead costs of Clorin before and after sales reached nationwide scale, and analyzed Clorin sales revenue. The average cost per bottle of Clorin production, marketing and distribution at start-up in 1999 was $1.88 but decreased by 82% to $0.33 in 2003, when >1.7 million bottles were sold. The financial loss per bottle decreased from $1.72 in 1999 to $0.24 in 2003. Net program costs in 2003 were $428,984, or only $0.04 per person-month of protection. A sensitivity analysis showed that if the bottle price increased to $0.18, the project would be self-sustaining at maximum capacity. This analysis demonstrated that efficiencies in the SWS supply chain can be achieved through social marketing. Even with a subsidy, overall program costs per beneficiary are low.

The research of hydrogeochemical mechanism of petroleum hydrocarbon in karst fissure groundwater system is important to predict the trend of petroleum hydrocarbons and the change of groundwater environment. We take the karst fissure water system as the research object, where there is a refinery. The variation of SO42-, HCO3-, NO3-, NO2-, HS- can be used as a hydrogeochemical sign of petroleum hydrocarbon pollution by analyzing the change of water quality parameters before and after karst fissure water contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbon. It has been also analyzed systematically that hydrogeochemical mechanism including desulfurization, denigration and ion exchange happen during the pollution process in the karst fissure water system. It is pointed out that the human activities have a great impact on the groundwater and changes of environment.

The decontamination of Legionella pneumophila and other heterotrophic microbes by heat flushing in four legionellae-positive hot water systems was studied. Before the decontamination procedure, the concentration of legionellae varied from 3.0 × 10−3 to 3.5 × 10−5 cfu/L and the hot water temperature from 43.6 to 51.5 °C. During the contamination the temperature was raised to 60–70 °C. All taps and showers were cleaned from sediments and flushed with hot water twice a day for several minutes. The decontamination lasted for 2–4 weeks. In a few weeks the heat-flushing method reduced the concentration of legionellae below the detection limit (50 cfu/L) in the hot circulating water system just before and after the heat exchanger. The high hot water temperature also decreased the viable counts of heterotrophic bacteria, fungi, and total microbial cells determined by the epifluorescent microscopy. However, the eradication of legionellae failed in a water system where the water temperature remained below 60 °C in some parts of the system. After the decontamination, the temperature of hot water was lowered to 55 °C. Thereafter, all the studied hot water systems were recolonized by legionellae within a few months, showing that the decontamination by heat flushing was temporary. Also, the contamination of other bacteria increased in a few months to the level before decontamination.Key words: legionellae, hot water system, decontamination, water temperature, heterotrophic bacteria.

The friction and wear properties of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings before and after gamma irradiation were studied under vacuum conditions. Experimental results indicated that the friction and wear properties of PTFE coatings were improved by gamma irradiation. Results showed that the wear process of PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation consists of three stages. The steps for the irradiated PTFE are slightly longer than that for the non-irradiated samples. The friction coefficient of irradiated PTFE coatings reduces slightly compared to that of the non-irradiated samples. The friction coefficients of the PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation first increase with the increase of sliding velocity and then decrease with the increase of sliding velocity, and The friction coefficient of PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation decreases with the increase of load. The wear of irradiated PTFE coatings is slightly lower than that of non-irradiated PTFE coatings. The wear of PTFE coatings before and after gamma irradiation first decreases with the increase of sliding speed and then increases as the sliding speed increases. The wear of PTFE coatings first decreases with the increase of load and then increases with the increase of load. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was utilized to investigate the worn surfaces.
