Porous ceramics were produced by compaction method of Nigerian clay and cassava starch. The samples were prepared by adding an amount from 5 to 30%wt of cassava starch into the clay and sintered at temperature of 900-1300°C. The influence of cassava starch content on the bulk density and apparent porosity was studied. The result of XRD and DTA/TGA shows that the optimum sintering temperature was found to be 1300°C. The percentage porosity increased from 12.87 to 43.95% while bulk density decreased from 2.16 to 1.46g/cm3 with the increase of cassava starch from 5 to 30%wt. The effect of sintering temperature and cassava starch content improved the microstructure in terms of porosity and the thermal properties of porous clay for various applications which requires a specific porosity.

The vertical vibration compaction method (VVCM), heavy compaction method and static pressure method were used to form phyllite specimens with different degrees of weathering. The influence of cement content, compactness, and compaction method on the mechanical properties of phyllite was studied. The mechanical properties of phyllite was evaluated in terms of unconfined compressive strength (Rc) and modulus of resilience (Ec). Further, test roads were paved along an expressway in China to demonstrate the feasibility of the highly weathered phyllite improvement technology. Results show that unweathered phyllite can be used as subgrade filler. In spite of increasing compactness, phyllite with a higher degree of weathering cannot meet the requirements for subgrade filler. With increasing cement content, Rc and Ec of the improved phyllite increases linearly. Rc and Ec increase by at least 15% and 17%, respectively, for every 1% increase in cement content and by at least 10% and 6%, respectively, for every 1% increase in compactness. The higher the degree of weathering of phyllite, the greater the degree of improvement of its mechanical properties.

Along with large national investment in infrastructure construction, the mileage of the highway, which is one of the infrastructures, has increased year by year. There are many kinds of artificial filling foundation treatment methods for housing construction project in mountain highway facilities. This paper, combined with the engineering example, focuses on the dynamic compaction method and the replacement method.

Abstract A novel preform compaction method based on one new type of divisible mould was employed for fabricating single-grain YBCO bulk superconductor, which can complete the preform demoulding process through opening of the mould, rather than pushing the preform out in the regular mould. Thus it has natural superiority on eliminating macro-cracks, which has been proved by the sample surface morphology and the trapped field characterization. In addition, the divisible mould pressed sample exhibits higher levitation force and trapped field properties than the regular mould pressed samples, verifying the potentials of the divisible mould on improving the bulk performance. The optical micrograph results prove the superiority of the divisible mould on eliminating tiny cracks on sample surface. The processing facility and sample reliability brought by the divisible mould should also be emphasized, because the crushing and re-pressing of preform when it presents visible cracks can be omitted and the failed samples with surface cracks will no longer appear. Consequently, the experimental efficiency and stability are both enhanced.
