Zero field hyperfine resonance of atomic hydrogen gas confined in liquid helium coated containers is shown to be a versatile technique for studying the interaction of atomic hydrogen with the surfaces of liquid 3He and 4He. Using a simple but realistic model for the effects of collisions with the helium walls, a general result is obtained for the time dependence of the amplitude and phase of the magnetization following a radio frequency magnetic field pulse. It is then shown how binding energies, sticking coefficients, and the distribution of times between sticking events can be obtained. As an example, we present the analysis of experimental data from which the previously reported sticking probability for H on 3He was obtained, and corrected data from which a value of 0.046 is obtained for the sticking probability of H on 4He.
