Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived feedstock to high-value chemicals is of remarkable significance for alleviating dependence on fossil energy resources. MgAl spinel-supported Pt catalysts were prepared and used in furfuryl alcohol conversion. The approaches to tune the reaction selectivity toward pentanediols (PeDs) were investigated and the catalytic performance was correlated to the catalysts’ physicochemical properties based on comprehensive characterizations. It was found that 1–8 wt% Pt was highly dispersed on the MgAl2O4 support as nanoparticles with small sizes of 1–3 nm. The reaction selectivity did not show dependence on the size of Pt nanoparticles. Introducing LiOH onto the support effectively steered the reaction products toward the PeDs at the expense of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) selectivity. Meanwhile, the major product in PeDs was shifted from 1,5-PeD to 1,2-PeD. The reasons for the PeDs selectivity enhancement were attributed to the generation of a large number of medium-strong base sites on the Li-modified Pt catalyst. The reaction temperature is another effective factor to tune the reaction selectivity. At 230 °C, PeDs selectivity was enhanced to 77.4% with a 1,2-PeD to 1,5-PeD ratio of 3.7 over 4Pt/10Li/MgAl2O4. The Pt/Li/MgAl2O4 catalyst was robust to be reused five times without deactivation.

The aqueous phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of furfuryl alcohol over Cu/MgAl and Cu/ZnAl catalysts with different Mg/Al and Zn/Al molar ratios, were investigated. Mg-Al and Zn-Al mixed oxides derived from hydrotalcites precursors were used as supports, which were impregnated with an aqueous solution of copper nitrate by incipient wetness impregnation. The HDO reaction was carried out in a typical batch reactor at 5 MPa of H2 and 200 °C for 4 h. Among the catalysts studied, the Cu/MgAl-0.5 catalyst exhibited the higher furfuryl alcohol conversion (86%) and yield of cyclopentanol (35%), which is the reaction product with the highest hydrogen-carbon (H/C) ratio. With the Cu/MgAl-3 catalyst a high cyclopentanone yield (67%) was achieved. The results obtained, showed that copper supported on mixed oxides catalysts derived from hydrotalcite precursors are a promising alternative to improve the bio-oil quality.

Cytokinins are plant hormones that play a large and incompletely understood role in the life-cycle of plants. The goal of this study was to determine what roles cytokinins play in the morphological development of wheat. To achieve any real success in altering the development and growth of wheat, the cytokinins must be applied directly to the apical meristem, or spike of the plant. It is in this region that the plant cells are actively undergoing mitosis. Kinetin and Zeatin were the two cytokinins chosen for this experiment. Kinetin is an artificial hormone that was originally extracted from old or heated DNA. Kinetin is easily made from the reaction of adenine and furfuryl alcohol. Zeatin is a naturally occurring hormone found in corn, wheat, and many other plants.Chinese Spring Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was used for this experiment. Prior to planting, the seeds were germinated in a moist environment for 72 hours.

Vanadium oxide catalysts doped or mixed with 1-50 mole % Fe3+ ions were prepared. The structure of the original samples and those calcined from 200 up to 500 °C were characterized by TG, DTA, IR and X-ray diffraction. The SBET values and texture of the solid catalysts were investigated. The catalytic dehydration-dehydrogenation of isopropanol was carried out at 200 °C using a flow system. The results obtained showed an observable decrease in the activity of V2O5 on the addition of Fe3+ ions. Moreover, Fe2V4O13 is the more active and selective catalyst than FeVO4 spinels. The results were correlated with the active sites created on the catalyst surface.
