<i>Taenia saginata</i> infection has seldom been reported in Cambodia. In this study, we performed a survey of intestinal parasites in 1,156 residents of Preah Vihear and Stung Treng Provinces in 2018. The results revealed that 26 (2.4%) cases were positive for Taenia spp. eggs. In order to obtain the strobilae of the tapeworms, 2 patients in Preah Vihear were treated with praziquantel and purged with magnesium salts. The proglottids expelled after the medication were morphologically and molecularly analyzed to determine the species. The main uterine lateral braches in gravid proglottids were >15 in number suggesting that they are either <i>T. saginata</i> or <i>Taenia asiatica</i>. The sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (<i>cox1</i>) gene and 2 nuclear loci, elongation factor-1 alpha (<i>ef1</i>) and ezrin-radixin-moesin-like protein (<i>elp</i>), were identical to the sequences of <i>T. saginata</i> available in GenBank but distant from <i>Taenia solium</i>, <i>T. asiatica</i>, and <i>T. saginata</i>-<i>T. asiatica</i> hybrid. This is the first report of the presence of <i>T. saginata</i> in the northern part of Cambodia bordering Lao PDR based on a molecular confirmation.

SUMMARYThe main aim of this study is to overview the past and present situations of human taeniases and cysticercosis in Indonesia and including future perspectives. Through joint projects from 1996, we have confirmed the occurrence ofTaenia saginata(beef tapeworm) in Bali, ofTaenia solium(pork tapeworm) mainly in Papua and sporadically in Bali, and ofTaenia asiaticain North Sumatra. These taeniases were caused through eating uncooked pork and pig viscera forT. soliumandT. asiatica, respectively, and beef forT. saginata. The distribution of these tapeworms in Indonesia is basically highly restricted by the traditional cultural and religious backgrounds in each island.T. saginatais relatively common in Bali although people consume pork ‘lawar’more than beef ‘lawar’. Taeniases due toT. saginataorT. asiaticaandT. soliumand cysticercosis due toT. soliumhave also been sporadically reported in some other islands. Among these species,T. soliumis exceptional since humans can be infected not only by larval stages (cysticerci) in pork but also by eggs released from human tapeworm carriers. Cysticercosis has been confirmed in Indonesia in humans, pigs and even dogs.

Abstract Taeniasis is an infectious disease caused by the tapeworm Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm), Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), and Taenia asiatica (Asian tapeworm). Purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between meat consumption, individual characteristics, and environmental factors with taeniasis. Case control study was used to identify taeniasis among two groups: people living at Datah village (personal livestock) and people living at Karangasem village (obtained their meat from traditional market or slaughterhouse). Each group consisted of 98 people. Two subjects from the case group were positive for taenia egg both by direct smear and Willy’s Malory floatation methods. Proportion of taeniasisinthe case group was 2.04%. The type of meat consumed, methods of meat processing, frequency of consumption, ways of obtaining meat, individual characteristics, and environmental factors which may contribute to Taenia infection could not be evaluated due to limited number of positive cases.

The urgency of the problem of human teniases is due to the widespread prevalence of these parasitoses, which often infect humans. The aim and result of the work is to summarize the available information about the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnosis, etiotropic therapy and prevention of human teniases.Conclusion. Teniases are widespread, including on the territory of Russia. The clinic mainly includes symptoms of lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, allergic reactions. Diagnostics is carried out on the basis of the detection of eggs, proglottids, coproangigens of parasites in the feces, serological and molecular genetic tests. Praziquantel is an effective etiotropic therapy. Prevention takes into account the peculiarities of the epidemiology of teniases.

Abstract Human taeniasis is still prevalent in many countries in the world and affecting human health. Three species of tapeworms in the genus Taenia, including Taenia asiatica, Taenia saginata, and Taenia solium are the most common pathogens for the diseases. The genetic relationships of T. saginata and T. asiatica are close. The natural hybridization between these two has not been clinically diagnosed in China. In this study, we report an 18-year-old male patient with taeniasis hospitalized in Yunnan, China, in 2019. The patient was treated with traditional Chinese medicine, and a tapeworm around 2.7 m long was expelled. The morphology of egg and gravid proglottid of the tapeworm were revealed. More interesting is that the tapeworm was identified as a T. saginata-T. asiatica hybridized by the molecularly and phylogenetic analysis. The case study reported the first human taeniasis caused by the T. saginata and T. asiatica hybridization and suggested that the new types of hybridized taeniases exist in China and further investigation and research on the pathogens in Yunnan is needed.

The pork and beef tapeworms, Taenia solium and Taenia saginata respectively, are taeniid cestodes and major food-borne or meat-borne zoonoses. Human tapeworms and swine cysticerci have been known since Egyptian and Greek cultures. Nevertheless their association as part of the life cycle of the same parasite was only demonstrated during the nineteenth century. Kuchenmeister fed convicts with cysticerci excised from pork meat and found adult tapeworms in the intestine after autopsy, while van Beneden fed T. solium eggs to pigs and found numerous cysticerci in muscles after slaughter (Grove, 1990).T. solium is the only causative agent of neurocysticercosis in humans and is, therefore, the more important of these species in public health. This chapter describes classical aspects of the morphology of the parasites as well as clinical aspects of the diseases they cause. Most importantly, detailed explanations of taxonomic aspects, specially related to the newly recognized Taenia asiatica are given. Furthermore, the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of the parasites, as well as intervention measures such as health education, mass drug treatment and vaccination, are described in detail. The chapter concludes with considerations on the surveillance and a discussion on prospects for the control of these cestode zoonoses.

Abstract Taenia saginata, Taenia solium and Taenia asiatica (beef, pork and Asian tapeworms, respectively) are parasitic flatworms of major public health and food safety importance. Among them, T. asiatica is a newly recognized species that split from T. saginata via an intermediate host switch ∼1.14 Myr ago. Here we report the 169- and 168-Mb draft genomes of T. saginata and T. asiatica. Comparative analysis reveals that high rates of gene duplications and functional diversifications might have partially driven the divergence between T. asiatica and T. saginata. We observe accelerated evolutionary rates, adaptive evolutions in homeostasis regulation, tegument maintenance and lipid uptakes, and differential/specialized gene family expansions in T. asiatica that may favour its hepatotropism in the new intermediate host. We also identify potential targets for developing diagnostic or intervention tools against human tapeworms. These data provide new insights into the evolution of Taenia parasites, particularly the recent speciation of T. asiatica.
