A method is outlined that allows the determination of one-dimensional stress gradients at length scales greater than 0.2 mm. By using standard four-circle X-ray diffractometer equipment and simple aperture components, length resolutions down to 0.05 mm in one direction can be achieved through constant orientation of a narrow, line-shaped beam spot. Angle calculations are given for the adjustment of goniometer angles, and for the effective azimuth and tilt of the scattering vector for general angle settings in a four-circle goniometer. The latter is necessary for the computation of stresses from lattice strain measurements.

AbstractWhen an electric field is applied to a ferroelectric the crystal lattice spacing changes as a result of the converse piezoelectric effect. Although the piezoelectric effect and polarization switching have been investigated for decades there has been no direct nanosecond-scale visualization of these phenomena in solid crystalline ferroelectrics. Synchrotron x-rays allow the polarization switching and the crystal lattice distortion to be visualized in space and time on scales of hundreds of nanometers and hundreds of picoseconds using ultrafast x-ray microdiffraction. Here we report the polarization switching visualization and polarization domain wall velocities for Pb(Zr0.45Ti0.55)O3 thin film ferroelectric capacitors studied by time-resolved x-ray microdiffraction.

SummaryMany papers have been written on the measurement of strain by X-ray diffraction methods and on the interpretation of these strains in terms of stresses. Whereas, during the past few years, the experimental methods of determining the strains have. remained largely unchanged, research has shown that the older techniques for calculating stresses from strains are not always valid.In this paper an attempt is made to describe some of the principles of strain measurement by X-ray diffraction methods to those who are unfamiliar with the methods. The types of stress and strain systems which may exist in polycrystalline metals are then considered, particular attention being paid to the effect of the elastic and plastic anisotropy of the individual crystals. Some indication is given as to how the earlier methods of interpreting X-ray strain measurements should be modified, but no rigid routine method is proposed for use in a general case.

Results of measurements of independent piezoelectric moduli d 11 and d 14 in Ca3NbGa3Si2O14, La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 and La3Ga5SiO14, promising single crystals of the calcium gallogermanate structural type, are presented. The moduli were measured with a triple-axis X-ray diffractometer under an external electric field which causes changes in the interplanar distances due to the reverse piezoelectric effect. The results of the X-ray diffractometry measurements agree fairly well (within less than 10%) with the results obtained by different methods.

We illustrate the x-ray Combined Analysis approach capabilities in characterizing silicates and phyllosilicates for samples exhibiting crystallographic textures. Two mullite composite ceramics, one elaborated under uniaxial pressure the other under centrifugation, and one uniaxially pressed montmorillonite aggregate, are studied in terms of texture, cell parameters and phase contents. Several weak texture components are present in the mullite samples, combinations of planar- and fibre-like textures. The methodology is able to take account of the amorphous silica-like matrix of the composite, and cell parameters and structure of mullite correspond to the commonly modelled used for this phase. The montmorillonite turbostratic phase is correctly reproduced with its fibre texture, eventhough minor phases are also present and modelled in the aggregate.
