The role of gender in the interaction between citizens and public sector employees attracts increasing attention. Notably, gender effects have been described in performance evaluations across different contexts. With respect to student evaluations of teaching, a series of observational studies as well as experimental studies have found that women are evaluated lower than men. In this paper, we conduct two experiments in Denmark to test whether a similar gender bias is present in a national context that is generally considered among the most gender equal. Study 1 investigates differences in the evaluation of two similar presentations by teachers reported to be either male or female. Study 2 focuses on the evaluation of teaching material prepared by men and women respectively. The two studies arrive at similar conclusions: There is no gender bias in favor of men in the evaluations made by students. The paper discusses the implications of these findings.

Introduction: Takostubo cardiomyopathy (TK) and STEMI in the proximal to mid LAD territory (LAD-S) may have similar clinical, ECG and echocardiographic presentation. The two can only be differentiated using coronary angiography. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that the ratio of serum BNP to troponin-I(TnI) will help in distinguishing TK from LAD-S. Previously it has been studied in TK and STEMI from any coronary artery lesion. This is the first study to tease out LAD-S and TK by using BNP/TnI ratio . Methods: We retrospectively compared patients who presented with LAD-S and patients with TK (confirmed with non-obstructive coronary angiography, classic echocardiographic appearance and subsequent improvement of LV function). Patients who did not have BNP and TnI available were excluded. Results: Out of 313 patients with LAD-S and 464 with possible TK, 39 and 62 patients were included respectively. Mean BNP and TnI levels were 788, 57.6ng/dl and 923, 3.4ng/dl in LAD-S and TK respectively. A BNP/TnI ratio of ≤6.4 was 100% sensitive and 41% specific to diagnose LAD-S, and therefore has 100% negative predictive value. A BNP/TnI ratio of ≥2388 was 80% sensitive and 93% specific for diagnosing TK. Conclusion: BNP/TnI ratio <6.4 is reliable to rule out TK and lead to the diagnosis of LAD-S in patients with typical echocardiographic findings. Further, larger observational studies are needed to validate the use of biomarkers for this purpose.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is dened as one chronic disease of central nervous system with neurodegenerative and inammatory components, where most of the patients shown a relapsingremitting course dened by the acute inception of focal neurologic decits and consistent focal inammatory changes visible on MRI. The causal factor of this complicated autoimmune and neurodegenerative disease is still unknown. Mitochondrial dysfunction is the key contributor to the neurodegenerative process of this disease. The current review signies the possible potential role of mitochondria in MS and the different dietary approach as a disease modier with the special emphasis on mitochondrial function and neurodegenerations.Research regarding therapeutic implementation of different diet in MS is advancing day by day; but currently remains with limited data. Few studies have been intended with meticulously collected observations, and the very few clinical trials that have been executed with insufcient sample size or length to adequately assess efcacy. More epidemiological and observational studies on dietary implementations were required

This chapter examines ensemble dynamics and time consciousness in indeterminate music, using John Cage’s Concert for Piano and Orchestra (1957–8) as a case study. Drawing on interviews and observational studies undertaken with the experimental music ensemble Apartment House, I examine the role of temporal indeterminacy in the socio-musical interactions that characterize performance, and its implications for the musicians’ experiences. In doing so, the chapter makes a broader contribution in its consideration of the ways in which issues of authorship and authority are negotiated in such temporal interactions, and how the dynamics of these negotiations present a sociality based on a ‘separate togetherness’, whereby performers play together (out of time) with one another.

• Objective To systematically review the randomized trials, observational studies, and survey evidence on compression and pneumatic devices for thromboprophylaxis in intensive care patients. • Methods Published studies on the use of compression and pneumatic devices in intensive care patients were assessed. A meta-analysis was conducted by using the randomized controlled trials. • Results A total of 21 relevant studies (5 randomized controlled trials, 13 observational studies, and 3 surveys) were found. A total of 811 patients were randomized in the 5 randomized controlled trials; 3421 patients participated in the observational studies. Trauma patients only were enrolled in 4 randomized controlled trials and 4 observational studies. Meta-analysis of 2 randomized controlled trials with similar populations and outcomes revealed that use of compression and pneumatic devices did not reduce the incidence of venous thromboembolism. The pooled risk ratio was 2.37, indicative of favoring the control over the intervention in reducing the deep venous thrombosis; however, the 95% CI of 0.57 to 9.90 indicated no significant differences between the intervention and the control. A range of methodological issues, including bias and confounding variables, make meaningful interpretation of the observational studies difficult. • Conclusions The limited evidence suggests that use of compressive and pneumatic devices yields results not significantly different from results obtained with no treatment or use of low-molecular-weight heparin. Until large randomized controlled trials are conducted, the role of mechanical approaches to thromboprophylaxis for intensive care patients remains uncertain.

The recent discovery of microRNAs (miRNAs) in human reproductive tissues and cells indicates a possible functional role in reproductive function. However, the studies published to date in female reproductive tissues/cells and embryos are inconclusive and sometimes controversial. In order to update the knowledge of this field, the present study aimed to discuss, through a systematic review, the role of miRNAs in female human reproduction and early embryogenesis. We conducted a systematic review of the published literature in MEDLINE and EMBASE databases through June 2018 (plus a complementary search until July 2019), in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. We have included descriptive and observational studies, in which fertile/infertile women were well-defined. The primary outcome was the miRNA expression in ovaries, oocytes, extracellular vesicles, and embryos. We identified 25,204 articles, of which 28 were selected for qualitative analysis: 18 in ovaries and extracellular vesicles, three in oocytes, and seven in embryos. The present systematic review of descriptive and observational studies demonstrates that aberrant miRNA expression in female reproductive tissues/cells and embryos is related with infertility and embryogenesis errors. The expression of specific miRNAs, particularly in extracellular vesicles, may be used in the future as biomarkers of infertility and prognostic tools of embryo development.

Abstract Rationale: There is an urgent need to better understand how to maintain cognitive functioning at older ages with social and behavioral interventions, given that there is currently no medical cure available to prevent, halt or reverse the progression of cognitive decline and dementia. However, in current models, it is still not well established which factors (e.g. education, BMI, physical activity, sleep, depression) matter most at which ages, and which behavioral profiles are most protective against cognitive decline. In the last years, advances in the fields of causal inference and machine learning have equipped epidemiology and social sciences with methods and models to approach causal questions in observational studies. Method: The presentation will give an overview of the causal inference framework and different machine learning approaches to investigate cognitive aging. First, we will present relevant research questions on the role of social and behavioral factors in cognitive aging in observational studies. Second, we will introduce the causal inference framework and recent methods to visualize and compute the strength of causal paths. Third, promising machine learning approaches to arrive at robust predictions are presented. The 13-year follow-up from the European SHARE survey that employs well-established cognitive performance tests is used to demonstrate the usefulness of the approach. Discussion: The causal inference framework, combined with recent machine learning approaches and applied in observational studies, provides a robust alternative to intervention research. Advantages for investigations under the new framework, e.g., fewer ethical considerations compared to intervention research, as well as limitations are discussed.
