Abstract The working state of lithium-ion batteries must be estimated accurately and efficiently in the battery management system. Building a model is the most prevalent way of predicting the battery's working state. Based on the variable order equivalent circuit model, this paper examines the attenuation curve of battery capacity with the number of cycles. It identifies the order of the equivalent circuit model using Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). Based on the correlation between capacity and resistance, the paper concludes that there is a nonlinear correlation between model parameters and state of health (SOH). The nonlinear autoregressive neural network with exogenous input (NARX) is used to fit the nonlinear correlation for capacity regeneration. Then, the self-adaptive weight particle swarm optimization (SWPSO) method is suggested to train the neural network. Finally, single-battery and multi-battery tests are planned to validate the accuracy of the SWPSO-NARX estimate of SOH. The experimental findings indicate that the SOH estimate effect is significant.

The frequent occurrence of electric vehicle fire accidents reveals the safety hazards of batteries. When a battery fails, its symmetry is broken, which results in a rapid degradation of its safety performance and poses a great threat to electric vehicles. Therefore, accurate battery fault diagnoses and prognoses are the key to ensuring the safe and durable operation of electric vehicles. Thus, in this paper, we propose a new fault diagnosis and prognosis method for lithium-ion batteries based on a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) neural network and boxplot for the first time. Firstly, experiments are conducted under different temperature conditions to guarantee the diversity of the data of lithium-ion batteries and then to ensure the accuracy of the fault diagnosis and prognosis at different working temperatures. Based on the collected voltage and current data, the NARX neural network is then used to accurately predict the future battery voltage. A boxplot is then used for the battery fault diagnosis and early warning based on the predicted voltage. Finally, the experimental results (in a new dataset) and a comparative study with a back propagation (BP) neural network not only validate the high precision, all-climate applicability, strong robustness and superiority of the proposed NARX model but also verify the fault diagnosis and early warning ability of the boxplot. In summary, the proposed fault diagnosis and prognosis approach is promising in real electric vehicle applications.

State of charge (SOC) of the lithium-ion batteries is one of the key parameters of the battery management system, which the performance of SOC estimation guarantees energy management efficiency and endurance mileage of electric vehicles. However, accurate SOC estimation is a difficult problem owing to complex chemical reactions and nonlinear battery characteristics. In this paper, the method of the dynamic neural network is used to estimate the SOC of the lithium-ion batteries, which is improved based on the classic close-loop nonlinear auto-regressive models with exogenous input neural network (NARXNN) model, and the open-loop NARXNN model considering expected output is proposed. Since the input delay, feedback delay, and hidden layer of the dynamic neural network are usually selected by empirically, which affects the estimation performance of the dynamic neural network. To cover this weakness, sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is used for global optimal dynamic neural network parameters. Then, the experimental results are verified to obtain the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method under different conditions. Finally, the dynamic neural network based on SCA is compared with unscented Kalman filter (UKF), back propagation neural network based on particle swarm optimization (BPNN-PSO), least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM), and Gaussian process regression (GPR), the results show that the proposed dynamic neural network based on SCA is superior to other methods.

Remaining useful life (RUL) is a crucial assessment indicator to evaluate battery efficiency, robustness, and accuracy by determining battery failure occurrence in electric vehicle (EV) applications. RUL prediction is necessary for timely maintenance and replacement of the battery in EVs. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) technique to predict the RUL of lithium-ion batteries under various training datasets. A multi-channel input (MCI) profile is implemented and compared with single-channel input (SCI) or single input (SI) with diverse datasets. A NASA battery dataset is utilized and systematic sampling is implemented to extract 10 sample values of voltage, current, and temperature at equal intervals from each charging cycle to reconstitute the input training profile. The experimental results demonstrate that MCI profile-based RUL prediction is highly accurate compared to SCI profile under diverse datasets. It is reported that RMSE for the proposed MCI profile-based ANN technique is 0.0819 compared to 0.5130 with SCI profile for the B0005 battery dataset. Moreover, RMSE is higher when the proposed model is trained with two datasets and one dataset, respectively. Additionally, the importance of capacity regeneration phenomena in batteries B0006 and B0018 to predict battery RUL is investigated. The results demonstrate that RMSE for the testing battery dataset B0005 is 3.7092, 3.9373 when trained with B0006, B0018, respectively, while it is 3.3678 when trained with B0007 due to the effect of capacity regeneration in B0006 and B0018 battery datasets.
