Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique using specific primer can be used to detect transgenes. The present study was undertaken to detect salmon growth hormone (GH) gene in transgenic tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by PCR. DNA was extracted from F1 Tilapia generated by crossing transgenic parents. Two primers were designed to amplify a part of the region of GH gene sequence, which was used to make transgenic tilapia. To confirm the specificity of the selected primer, PCR was performed on diluted DNAs, extracted from tilapia fin tissues. GH transgene sequences (1500 bp) were successfully amplified from transgenic fish in this study. The specificity of the primers was found to be high in detecting the salmon GH transgenes. The PCR-based method therefore, could be used for fast and easy screening of transgenic fish for this gene.J. Environ. Sci. & Natural Resources, 8(2): 47-49 2015

Aquaculture is composed of various themes of interest, particularly does eutrophization due to feeding have direct effects on fish ponds and the whole aquatic system. This study focused on the study of the water quality of an aquatic system related to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) rearing. Sampling was done at six sites during one rearing cycle (six months), taking water from the source of water supply, the fish pond itself, the effluent of the fish pond and the mixed waters. A principal component analysis revealed that, among all the environmental variables analyzed, chlorophyll-a, total nitrogen and phosphorus and organic matter were responsible for the variations observed during the rearing cycle. Other sources of variability extrinsic to the fish pond make it evident that the assessment must take the entire aquatic system related to the rearing into consideration, minimizing negative effects.

This study aimed to compare 5 feed processing for O. niloticus fingerlings: ME1: micro-extruded 1 mm; ED03: extruded and disintegrated 0.3 mm; ED06: extruded and disintegrated 0.6 mm; BF03: bran 0.3 mm and BF06: bran 0.6 mm. Feed conversion was lower in ME1 and ED06. The protein retention coefficient was statistically higher in ME1. The fish proximate composition did not differ among treatments. Although superior in ME1 weight gain did not differ statistically from ED06. ME1 resulted in nitrogen and phosphorus in water statistically lower. ME1, ED06 and BF06 obtained the highest partial net revenues. Thus, ME1 presented the best zootechnical indices, economic performance and reduced impact on water quality.
