Sublethal adverse effects may result from exposure of aquatic organisms to insecticides at environmentally relevant concentrations. Fingerlings of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus, 1758), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella, Valenciennes, 1844), and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis, Richardson, 1845) were exposed to diafuran, an insecticide widely used during rice cultivation in Southern Brazil. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between the lethal concentration (LC50) of diafuran and the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in brain and muscle tissues of these species as a possible early biomarker of exposure to this insecticide. LC50 was determined for fish exposed to diafuran concentrations during 96 h (short term): common carp: control, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mg L-1; grass carp: control, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 mg L-1 and, bighead carp: control, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 mg L-1, as well as the determination of AChE at concentrations near LC50 for these species. LC50 values (nominal concentrations) were 1.81 mg L-1 for the common carp, 2.71 mg L-1 for the grass carp and, 2.37 mg L-1 for the bighead carp. All carps exposed to diafuran were lethargic (lower concentrations) or immobile. Diafuran inhibited the acetylcholinesterase activity in brain (~38%) and muscle (~50%) of all species. Muscle of bighead carp under control treatment showed higher specific AChE activity than brain (14.44 against 5.94 µmol min-1 g protein-1, respectively). Concentrations of diafuran used for rice cropping may affect Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Aristichthys nobilis behaviors and the AChE activities in brain and muscle of these species may be an early biomarker of toxicity of this insecticide.

The grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) is an important aquaculture species which is grown in many areas of the world. Because the species is the focus of basic and applied endocrinological studies, it is important to establish whether antibodies raised against common carp hormones will recognize hormones of the grass carp. Immunocytochemistry at the light-microscopic level, using the avidin–biotin complex method, and at the electron-microsopic level, using the protein A – gold method, revealed that rabbit anticarp prolactin, growth hormone, and gonadotropin each reacted with one cell type in an appropriate location in the grass carp pituitary gland. The results of these immunocytochemical studies support the suitability of antibodies raised against common carp hormones in immunocytochemical studies on the grass carp, and, by implication, in radioimmunoassay studies.

The ciliophoran parasite Apiosoma doliaris (Timofeev, 1962) Lom, 1966 was detected from the gills of fry of both grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella and common carp Cyprinus carpio during May 2018 at the ponds of Marine Science Centre Fish Hatchery, University of Basrah.. In the present study a brief description of A. doliaris was given. The occurrence of this species represents its first record in Iraq.

An experiment was carried out for 6 months on rearing of common carp, mirror carp, grass carp and silver carp under polyculture system at different stocking densities in cemented tanks (5 - 7 m in diameter and water depth 1.0 - 1.5 m). Observations were made on fish growth in terms of monthly and per day weight gain. Grass carp attained the maximum weight 686 ± 17, 720 ± 16.5 and 765 ± 9.6 in three tanks, respectively. Weight gained followed by silver carp as 680 ± 10 g, 680 ± 12.6 g and 701 ± 9.2 g in tank 1, tank 2 and tank 3, respectively. The common carp gained its average maximum weight 525 ± 10.7 g in tank3 and the mirror carp also attained its maximum weight 500 ± 12.2 g in same tank. In common carp the maximum average daily weight gain (3.2 ± 0.1 g) was in the month of December and lowest was (1.92 ± 0.2 g) in the month of August in tank 3. In mirror carp the maximum average daily weight gain (3.03 ± 0.09 g) was in the month of September and lowest (1.41 ± 0.07g) in the month of July in tank 3 and tank 2, respectively. In grass carp the maximum average daily weight gain (4.24 ± 0.17 g) was in the month of August and lowest (2.72 ± 0.07 g) in the month of July in tank 3 and tank 1, respectively. Among silver carp the maximum average daily weight gain (4.45 ± 0.01 g) recorded in the month of October and lowest was (2.61 ± 0.11 g) in the month of July in tank 1. The specific growth rate (SGR) was 1.23 ± 0.64 to 1.33 ± 0.83 in common carp, 1.27 ± 0.9 to 1.34 ± 0.8 in mirror carp, 1.36 ± 0.86 to 1.55 ± 1.13 in grass carp and 1.41 ± 0.83 to 1.52 ± 1.09 in silver carp in different culture treatments.Bangladesh J. Literature reviews of all references concerning the parasitic fauna of fishes in fish farms of Babylon province, middle of Iraq, showed that a total of 92 valid parasite species are so far known from the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), and the silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) as well as from three freshwater fish species (Carassius auratus,Liza abu, andHeteropneustes fossilis) which were found in some fish farms of the same province. The parasitic fauna included one mastigophoran, three apicomplexans, 13 ciliophorans, five myxozoans, five trematodes, 45 monogeneans, five cestodes, three nematodes, two acanthocephalans, nine arthropods, and one mollusc. The common carp was found to harbour 81 species of parasites, the grass carp 30 species, the silver carp 28 species,L. abu13 species,C. auratusone species, andH. fossilisone species. A host-parasite list for each fish species was also provided.
