Urban building energy modeling (UBEM) is arousing interest in building energy modeling, which requires a large building dataset as an input. Building use is a critical parameter to infer archetype buildings for UBEM. This paper presented a case study to determine building use for city-scale buildings by integrating the Geographic Information System (GIS) based point-of-interest (POI) and community boundary datasets. A total of 68,966 building footprints, 281,767 POI data, and 3367 community boundaries were collected for Changsha, China. The primary building use was determined when a building was inside a community boundary (i.e., hospital or residential boundary) or the building contained POI data with main attributes (i.e., hotel or office building). Clustering analysis was used to divide buildings into sub-types for better energy performance evaluation. The method successfully identified building uses for 47,428 buildings among 68,966 building footprints, including 34,401 residential buildings, 1039 office buildings, 141 shopping malls, and 932 hotels. A validation process was carried out for 7895 buildings in the downtown area, which showed an overall accuracy rate of 86%. A UBEM case study for 243 office buildings in the downtown area was developed with the information identified from the POI and community boundary datasets. The proposed building use determination method can be easily applied to other cities. We will integrate the historical aerial imagery to determine the year of construction for a large scale of buildings in the future.

Abstract- Many of high-rise office buildings in Indonesia applies efficiency and effectivity of building form,cost, and time for construction as a number one priority. As a result, high-rise office buildings appears with aminimum-articulated form, and show the dominance by using glass materials as a facade. However, there arealso high-rise office buildings that have an articulated form and its facades that are not dominated by glass,although they appear in small numbers. Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and Wisma Dharmala Sakti Surabayaare one of them. Moreover, both buildings were designed by foreign architect, Paul Rudolph. Based on thepotentials of both buildings, this research focused on Paul Rudolph’s principles in designing high-rise officebuildings in Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and Wisma Dharmala Sakti SurabayaLooking at the phenomena of high-rise office buildings in Indonesia as described earlier, this smallnumber and the articulated form of high-rise office buildings designed by Paul Rudolph in Indonesia areinteresting to be understood even more. The main purpose of this research is to reveal the relationship betweenPaul Rudolph’s design principles with buildings, which are Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and WismaDharmala Sakti Surabaya.Using an interpretative method in a qualitative research, this research utilized theories that helpsunderstanding of an office building, theories that related to Paul Rudolph’s background and common thoughtabout architecture, and also Paul Rudolph’s theory about determinants of architectural form as a literaturestudy. Building’s Anatomy Theory is used as a surgical tool to disect the study cases, which happens to beWisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta and Wisma Dharmala Sakti Surabaya.Result of this research are six points of Paul Rudolph’s principles in designing high-rise office buildingwhich are: repetition, space, scale, rotation, light, and context. Implementation of Paul Rudolph’s designprinciples in both study cases can be seen in the dominance of rotation and repetition of building elements. Theapplication of these two principles can fulfill all the three aspects of Paul Rudolph’s design ideal, which areform, context, and cycle.Benefit of this research is to enrich architectural vocabulary about design principles of a high-riseoffice buildings in Indonesia for the concerned educational institution, as a consideration and input toarchitects and the stakeholders to be more sensitive and critical in designing high-rise buildings in Indonesia,as a reference and study case about design principles of a high-rise office buildings for students, academics,architects, and the public with the focus of study concerned, and enrich the knowledge about Paul Rudolph’sdesign principles especially in designing high-rise office buildings in Indonesia for researcher.Keywords: Paul Rudolph, Design Principles, Office, Wisma Dharmala Sakti Jakarta, Wisma Dharmala SaktiSurabaya.

Accidental and intentional explosions are incidents often destroying buildings and leaving casualties. As a re­sult of these blasts all over the world, demand of safe constructions with less vulnerability to explosions is rising. A large number of office buildings are built each year in many countries, housing large numbers of staff and clients, and due to specific nature and function, activities and services, these buildings are usually centrally located. Their architectural form being vital, therefore the article attempts, firstly, to present indices depicting the building form from the viewpoint of vulnerability to explosion. Secondly, the article presents such indexes as: capability to reduce blast effects, economic factors, simplicity of implementation, relationship among spaces in the crisis condition, and creating the least unusable space. The model of rapid assessment of vulnerability of office buildings forms to blast, SMART (simple multi attribute ranking technique) procedure is used and, applying the SWARA method, the weight of each major index and sub-index is arrived at. The model presented in the paper shows the assessment systems using figures between zero and a hundred, and four levels of vulnerability: weak, medium, good and excellent. The closer the figure to a hundred, the lower the vulnerability of the office building forms to blast. Swiss Re Tower case study was presented in the article rating of vul­nerability of this building against explosion. It was found to be equal to 62.11%, and its standing was at medium level.

This study was conducted in response to the lack of green office buildings in Malaysia, despite the fact that the green concept has been initiated in Malaysia for many years. The Penang State Government has taken the initiative to establish the Penang Green Council (PGC) as the first state in Malaysia, and the implementation of green offices is one of its programme initiatives. Nonetheless, green offices are still in scarcity across Penang. This study identified the challenges faced in implementing green offices. Data were collected from five green building owners using semi-structured interviews and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The outcomes revealed that the main challenges faced by green office adoption were lack of budget, lack of awareness, lack of expertise, ownership factor, and type of building. This study offers several implications for practitioners and policy makers to improve the adoption of green office in Malaysia. The results may be applied to raise awareness amongst practitioners and office owners regarding green practices in office buildings. The study outcomes may serve as reference to policy makers on enhancing the development of green buildings.
