In this paper, an analytical method of the beam with springs and dampers fixed at the ends was proposed based on equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) system and secondary Lagrange’s dynamic equations, in order to develop a new effective method to enhance the aseismic capability of underground structures. The dynamic response of elastically supported and damply supported beams subjected to both seismic loading and static axial loading was analyzed by the proposed analytical procedure. The theoretical results were validated by the numerical simulation. In order to further investigate the effects of springs and dampers fixed at the ends of the columns in nonlinear response situation, the 3D nonlinear seismic responses of the Dakai metro station structure with and without the isolators were analyzed by ABAQUS respectively. It is demonstrated that: (1) the proposed analytical procedure can predict the dynamic response of beams with elastic and damper supports subjected to both seismic loading and axial loading. (2) Setting isolators at the supports of the column could enhance the aseismic capability of the structure effectively. (3) The axial static loading induced by the gravity of the soil and structure provide the constraint on the column, and therefore could not be neglected in the structural dynamic analysis.

Previous studies show that Kalman filter (KF)-based dynamic response reconstruction of a structure has distinct advantages in the aspects of combining the system model with limited measurement information and dealing with system model errors and measurement Gaussian noises. However, because the recursive KF aims to achieve a least-squares estimate of state vector by minimizing a quadratic criterion, observation outliers could dramatically deteriorate the estimator’s performance and considerably reduce the response reconstruction accuracy. This study addresses the KF-based online response reconstruction of a structure in the presence of observation outliers. The outlier-robust Kalman filter (OKF), in which the outlier is discerned and reweighted iteratively to achieve the generalized maximum likelihood (ML) estimate, is used instead of KF for online dynamic response reconstruction. The influences of process noise and outlier duration to response reconstruction are investigated in the numerical study of a simple 5-story frame structure. The experimental work on a simply-supported overhanging steel beam is conducted to testify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that compared with the KF-based response reconstruction, the proposed OKF-based method is capable of dealing with the observation outliers and producing more accurate response construction in presence of observation outliers.

Simulation of the time histories of second-order wave effects is often performed by quadratic transformation of a wave time history. By the present approach, the quadratic transformation of waves is approximated by linear combinations of the products of component wave time records and their Hilbert transforms. The computational efficiency is greatly enhanced. The efficient quadratic transformation of a time history is for the time domain solution of structural dynamic response, and can also be used as a post-processor of the frequency domain solution for obtaining statistic parameters of dynamic response.

For an assembled structure with many bolted joints, predicting its dynamic response with high fidelity is always a difficult problem, because of the nonlinearity introduced by friction contact between jointed interfaces. The friction contact results in nonlinear stiffness and damping to a structure. To realize predictive simulation in structural dynamic design, these nonlinear behaviors must be carefully considered. In this paper, the dynamics of a multi-bolt jointed beam is calculated. A modified IWAN constitutive model, which can consider both tangential micro/macro slip and nonzero residual stiffness at macroslip phase, is developed to model nonlinear contact behaviors due to joint interfaces. A whole interface element integrating the proposed constitutive model is developed. The element is used to model the nonlinear stiffness and damping caused by bolted joints. The interface element is placed between the two contact interfaces. The other part of the beam is modeled by linear beam elements. A Matlab code is developed to realize the proposed nonlinear finite element dynamic analysis method. A hammer impact experiment for the bolt-jointed beam is conducted under different excitation force levels. The calculated nonlinear numerical results are compared with experimental results. It is shown that the effect of joint nonlinearity on structural dynamics can be observed from the response predicted by the proposed method. The numerical results agree well with the experimental results. This work validates the necessary of using nonlinear joint model for dynamic simulation of jointed structures.
