In spite of the difficulty in interpreting areas of contact in electron microscopy, the similarities in morphological appearance and the repeated suggestions of continuity of structure between the microtubules and other organelles indicate that the necessary structural requirements for a continuous system of membranes might exist within both neurons and glial cells. A membrane system in continuity with the plasma membrane of the cell would greatly increase the available surface area of any cell.
