This paper is concerned with the free vibration problem of nanobeams based on Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The governing equations for the vibration of Euler nanobeams are considered based on Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory. In this investigation, computationally efficient Bernstein polynomials have been used as shape functions in the Rayleigh-Ritz method. It is worth mentioning that Bernstein polynomials make the computation efficient to obtain the frequency parameters. Different classical boundary conditions are considered to address the titled problem. Convergence of frequency parameters is also tested by increasing the number of Bernstein polynomials in the simulation. Further, comparison studies of the results with existing literature are done after fixing the number of polynomials required from the said convergence study. This shows the efficacy and powerfulness of the method. The novelty of using the Bernstein polynomials is addressed in detail and solutions obtained by this method provide a better representation of the vibration behavior of Euler nanobeams.

An analytical model of a non-pneumatic tire is proposed to study the static deformation responses of a non-pneumatic tire in contact with a rigid ground. The tire consists of a shear band which is formed by an annular beam, and elastic spokes that connect the shear band to the rigid hub of the tire. The shear band is modeled using a Timoshenko beam. The spokes are modeled by linear springs, which are distributed evenly in circumferential direction. Governing equations of the model were derived using a theoretical analysis. The shear band static deformation was obtained based on the discussion of the relationship between spoke stiffness and the parameters of the shear band. A finite element model was developed to verify the accuracy of the model. As a part of the results from this study, a parametric analysis of quantities of interest for the tire is presented, which can be used in improving the optimal design of non-pneumatic tires. This scheme offers a holonomic solution for the complicated differential equations and gives a computationally efficient tool for rapid analyzing and designing such systems.

Abstract We present an efficient data-driven sparse identification of dynamical systems. The work aims at reconstructing the different sets of governing equations and identifying discontinuity surfaces in hybrid systems when the number of discontinuities is known a priori. In a two-stages approach, we first locate the switches between separate vector fields. Then, the dynamics among the manifolds are regressed, in this case by making use of the existing algorithm of Brunton et al. [1]. The reconstruction of the discontinuity surfaces comes as the outcome of a statistical analysis implemented via symbolic regression with small clusters (micro-clusters) and a rigid library of models. These allow to classify all the feasible discontinuities that are clustered and to reduce them into the actual discontinuity surfaces. The performances of the sparse regression hybrid model discovery are tested on two numerical examples, namely, a canonical spring-mass hopper and a free/impact electromagnetic energy harvester, engineering archetypes characterized by the presence of a single and double discontinuity, respectively. Results show that a supervised approach, i.e. where the number of discontinuities is preassigned, is computationally efficient and it determines accurately both discontinuities and set of governing equations. A large improvement in the time of computation is found with the maximum achievable reliability. Informed regression-based identification offers the prospect to outperform existing data-driven identification approaches for hybrid systems at the expense of instructing the algorithm for expected discontinuities.

We propose a new design for large-scale multimedia content protection systems. Our design leverages cloud infrastructures to provide cost efficiency, rapid deployment, scalability, and elasticity to accommodate varying workloads. The proposed system can be used to protect different multimedia content types, including videos, images, audio clips, songs, and music clips. The system can be deployed on private and/or public clouds. Our system has two novel components: (i) method to create signatures of videos, and (ii) distributed matching engine for multimedia objects. The signature method creates robust and representative signatures of videos that capture the depth signals in these videos and it is computationally efficient to compute and compare as well as it requires small storage. The distributed matching engine achieves high scalability and it is designed to support different multimedia objects. We implemented the proposed system and deployed it on two clouds: Amazon cloud and our private cloud. Our experiments with more than 11,000 videos and 1 million images show the high accuracy and scalability of the proposed system. In addition, we compared our system to the protection system used by YouTube and our results show that the YouTube protection system fails to detect most copies of videos, while our system detects more than 98% of them.

AbstractDrug contamination in water is one of the current fields of study. Since 1990, the presence of drugs in drinking water has been a concern to scientists and public. In Mexico, these organic compounds are not efficiently removed in wastewater treatment plants; therefore, alternative methodologies have been studied that allow these compounds to have a high percentage of degradation or be completely degraded. One example of these techniques is heterogeneous photocatalysis which has obtained positive results in the degradation of drugs using ZnO nanoparticles. These are commonly selected for their electrical characteristics, even though they disperse in water and an additional unit operation is required to separate them from the liquid medium. To eliminate drugs with nano particles in a single stage, polycaprolactone-based membranes with adhered ZnO nanoparticles, by means of electrospinning, were prepared to degrade drugs such as diclofenac. The technique used has shown to efficiently break down diclofenac in 4 hours according to the capillary electrophoresis readings.
