This case study presents the design, operation, and results of a soil improvement project using the vacuum preloading method on 480 000 m2 of reclaimed land in Xingang Port, Tianjing, China. The areas treated with vacuum ranged from 5000 to 30 000 m2. The effects of soil improvement are demonstrated through the average consolidation settlement of 2.0 m and increases in undrained shear strengths by a factor of two to four or more. The study shows that the vacuum method is an effective tool for the consolidation of very soft, highly compressive clayey soils over a large area. The technique is especially feasible in cases where there is a lack of surcharge loading fills, extremely low shear strength, soft ground adjacent to critical slopes, and access to a power supply.Key words: vacuum preloading consolidation, soil improvement, soft clays, land reclamation, prefabricated vertical drains.

The Municipality of Velika Plana has been taking serious steps when it comes to initiating landconsolidation projects which help realize the land reclamation projects in the simplest way. Whit theaim of obtaining the base for carrying out land reclamation projects, this work deals with and presentsthe survey of the hydrographic features of Municipality of Velika Plana, as well as, water regime andthe river basin of the Velika Morava River. Based on measuring data obtained at Ljubicevski most, water gauge survey station we have performed and presented the analysis of the distinctive annual flowover a longer period of time as well as the analysis related to the changes in parameters which occur onan annual basis. On the basis of performed analysis we have been able to determine the amounts ofwater for irrigation available in the Velika Morava River basin at the territory of Velika Plana, whichwas the main focus and objective of this research.

ABSTRACTThis study aims to: (1) find out what factors influence farmers' decisions in transferring land functions, and (2) formulate control strategies for land conversion. The method used in this study is a case study method, which is the sample unit is farmers who are still planting paddy fields and farmers who have converted land into oil palm plantations. Data analysis method to answer the first problem using logistic regression analysis, while to answer the second problem using SWOT-Classic analysis. The conclusions of this study are (1) the factors that significantly influence the decision of farmers in transferring land functions are income, production costs and education level, (2) the formulation of strategies that can be recommended based on the results of the SWOT analysis conducted as follows: (a) determine the rice field area of food crops in each village in Tanjung Lago Subdistrict, accompanied by socialization of land conversion rules, (b) Make improvements to the tidal land reclamation network in Tanjung Lago sub-district and encourage farmer groups in network management tidal land reclamation.ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk : (1) mengetahui factor apa saja yang berpengaruh terhadap keputusan petani dalam melakukan alih fungsi lahan, dan (2) merumuskan strategi pengendalian alih fungsi lahan.

Between 1950 and 1956, one fifth of the Italian landscape was profoundly reshaped. According to the first ten-year plan issued by the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, 51 aqueducts and around 3,000 km of roads would provide the necessary infrastructure to rehouse millions of farmers, while 139 new settlements and 46,450 isolated houses would result from the new subdivision of land. Besides the national funds, newly established local authorities were entrusted with the handling of all technical aspects concerning land reclamation and resettlement. Far from being the mere result of political agreements, such an impressive and multi-faceted reform process stood at the intersection of cultural debates, national ambitions and foreign ascendancies that sought substantial alternatives to modernization and urbanization. This paper highlights an off-radar case study, with the aim of presenting and understanding some of the aspects featuring in the Italian discourse on rural planning. It deals with the intervention of the Bradano Valley Land Reclamation Authority and its main consultant, Nallo Mazzocchi Alemanni, and frames their efforts in the larger and multifaceted postwar Lucanian experience. Inscribed in the contemporary debate on regionalism and planning, the technical stance of Mazzocchi Alemanni would provide the foundation upon which to unfold the interweaving of contradictory ideologies deployed by intellectuals and activists seeking to uplift the Italian Mezzogiorno.
