This study aimed to investigate the moment carrying behavior of typical Tibetan timber beam-column joints under monotonic vertical static load and also evaluate the influence of length ratio of Gongmu to beam (LRGB) and dowels layout on the structural performance of the joint. Six full-scale specimens were fabricated with same construction but different Gongmu length and dowels position. The moment carrying performance of beam-column joints in terms of failure mode, moment resistance, and rotational stiffness of joints were obtained via monotonic loading tests. Test results indicated that all joints are characterized by compressive failure perpendicular to grain of Ludou. Additionally, it was found that greater LRGB leads to greater initial rotational stiffness and maximum moment of the joint by an increase of restraint length for beam end; however, offsetting dowels toward column resulted smaller stiffness and ultimate bending moment of joints, particularly, offsetting Beam-Gongmu dowels toward column changed the moment-rotation curve pattern of the beam-column joint, accompanied by a hardening stiffness at last phase. Furthermore, a simplified trilinear model was proposed to represent the moment-rotation relationship of the typical Tibetan timber beam-column joint.

A detailed study on the available methods of predicting ground movements due to tunnelling works was carried out during the construction of the Madrid Metro extensions in 1995–1999 and 1999–2003. A total of 100 km were built and commissioned during this period. A numerical model was developed to simulate the earth pressure balance (EPB) excavation procedure and to complement some of the deficiencies found in previous analytical or empirical subsidence estimation procedures. Before the beginning of the works, a total of six different methods were used to estimate ground movements generated by the tunnelling works at some monitored sections placed in all five cities linked by the 1999–2003 extension, and the estimations were published in an earlier paper in this journal. Once all tunnelling works were finished and actual measurements carried out, a number of comparisons between predictions and measurements were made and are included in this paper. Conclusions about the applicability and accuracy of the methods are established with the aim of helping researchers and engineers in their future projects.Key words: ground movements, monitoring, numerical modelling and analysis, settlement, tunnels.

In this paper, numerical modelling and analysis of a hybrid-spar floating wind turbine is presented. The hybrid-spar consists of steel at the upper part and the precast prestressed concrete (PC) at the lower part. Such a configuration is referred to as a hybrid-spar in this paper. The hybrid spar was successfully installed offshore of Kabashima Island, Goto city, Nagasaki prefecture, Japan on October 18, 2013 (see OMAE2015-41544 [1] for details). In this paper, some details on numerical modelling of the hybrid-spar for design load analysis are presented. Then, the validation of the numerical analysis model is presented for a full-scale hybrid-spar model with 2-MW wind turbine.
