Recently individually dispersed adult beech trees have regenerated in spruce monocultures and this fact could be used to manage the transformation of stands into a mixed forest. Three such cases in the fir-beech and spruce-beech forest zones were analyzed. Beech regeneration is dispersed to distances of several hundred meters regardless of the configuration of the terrain. Using a model we describe this process by a dispersion curve that can be broken up into three sections: (1) directly under the crown as the result of barochory; (2) from 15 to 30 m from the trunk, where the barochoric and zoochoric dispersal of beech nuts intersects; (3) from the "breakpoint" to farther away as a result of zoochory. Regeneration is utilizable as an optimal or at least acceptable method for creating the next economically valuable stands only in sections 1 and 2. In section 3 individual trees may be the central points for the transformation of the second successive forest generation. With spontaneous development without protection from game the density is in the range of hundreds of individuals; in protected groups density can be in the range of tens of thousands of individuals per hectare.

The study focused on the effects of gap size on natural regeneration of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) and micro-environmental soil conditions in gaps of different sizes under temperate mixed forest in the Czech Republic. Six gaps comprising two for small (≥ 200 m<sup>2</sup>), medium (≥ 500 m<sup>2</sup>) and big (≥ 900 m<sup>2</sup>) each were selected. Ten circular 1 m<sup>2</sup> subsampling plots were established at 2 m intervals along individual North-South-East-West transects, including one at the gap centre. Regeneration was monitored in 2014 and repeatedly in 2019. Soil conditions were only measured in 2019. Gap size was found to be a significant parameter for European beech natural regeneration in 2014. Besides, the quick occupation of European beech in gaps at natural beech zone provoked its prolific regeneration compared to Norway spruce in 2014. However, in 2019 the recent threat of weather variabilities was responsible for the general abysmal growth performance of natural regeneration. Division of gap microsites into different within-gap positions based on prevailing light or shade conditions was helpful in assessing the significant variations of soil conditions within-gap positions and among gap sizes. Soil temperature and moisture significantly influenced the regeneration of European beech and Norway spruce, respectively.

The objectives of this study are to determine a trend of the radial growth at breast height (b.h.) and to compare the radial growth of trees of younger and older generations in the XX century for fir (Abies alba Mill.), beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the Świętokrzyski National Park. In the investigated area fir, 41 to 200–300 years of age at breast height, gradually regenerated its radial growth after a very strong decline during 1971–1990, and most likely the process of vitality reduction and death of its stands of various age is slowly coming to an end. Pine showed a systematic decrease in the radial increment during 1885–1994, and there were no distinct symptoms indicating a change of this unfavourable trend. Beech showed no significant decrease in the radial increment during 1885–1994. In the Świętokrzyski National Park the differences in the radial growth between younger and older generations were noticeable only in the case of beech. The radial growth of trees of different ages was very similar in the case of fir and pine.
