Solution–processing methods were investigated as viable alternatives to produce the polymer-bonded barium hexaferrite (BaM). BaM powders were first synthesized by using the sol-gel auto-combustion method. While the ignition period in two synthesis batches varied, the morphology of hexagonal microplates and nanorods, as well as magnetic properties, were reproduced. To prepare magnetic polymer composites, these BaM powders were then incorporated into the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) matrix with a weight ratio of 80:20, 70:30, and 60:40 by using the solution casting method. Magnetizations were linearly decreased with a reduction in ferrite loading. Compared to the BaM loose powders and pressed pellet, both remanent and saturation magnetizations were lower and gave rise to comparable values of the squareness. The squareness around 0.5 of BaM samples and their composites revealed the isotropic alignment. Interestingly, the coercivity was significantly increased from 1727–1776 Oe in loose BaM powders to 1874–2052 Oe for the BaM-ABS composites. These composites have potential to be implemented in the additive manufacturing of rare-earth-free magnets.

The work deals with preparation of functional gradient alumina ceramics with controlled porosity by slip casting method of aqueous alumina suspension containing pore-generating agent. The sol-gel transition of AlO(OH) was employed to stabilize pore-generating agent in the suspension. The composite bodies with layers of variable porosity were prepared. Based on dilatometer measurement the admission difference of irreversible dilatation changes #αirr between compounded layers was determined in order to prepare defect free bi-layer bodies. The dependence of physical and mechanical properties of as fired composite bodies on the porosity value was expressed.

AbstractEr3+-doped Ba0.85Ca0.15Ti0.9Zr0.1O3 (xEr-BCTZ, x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.015) multifunctional thick films were prepared by the tape-casting method, using sol-gel-derived nano-sized powders as the matrix material. The surface morphologies, photoluminescence, and electrical properties were investigated. Dense microstructures with pure perovskite structure were obtained in the thick films. By doping an appropriate amount of Er3−, the samples exhibit superior up-conversion photoluminescence performance and simultaneously enhanced electrical performances. In addition, relatively higher texture fractions (with the largest value of 83.5%) were realized through introducing plate-like BaTiO3 templates to make the thick film grow by the [001]c orientation. And the ferro-/piezoelectric properties of the thick films were further improved, showing potential in the applications of micro-optoelectronic devices.

In this work thin films containing laser dye (DCM) doped with polystyrene (PS) were prepared using casting method. Titania (TiO2) nanoparticles also were synthesized using sol gel technique. Characteristics of the tetania were done using XRD patter, and the characteristic peak of anatase is sharper and clear to observe, in particular at 25.40° degree. While scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to achieve the morphology of TiO2samples, and to determine the sizes of nanoparticles. Different titania nanoparticle densities (0.882×1020, 1.765×1020, 2.648×1020, 3.530×1020and 4.413×1020cm-3) were co-doping with dye doped polymer and study the effect of this addition on the optical properties and electronic transition energy gaps in cases of both direct and indirect transitions.

ABSTRACTAlkoxide-based solutions were synthesized and used to prepare Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.90Ti0.10]O3 (90PMNT) thin layers on platinized Si. A multilayering spin casting method was used. The effects of preparation procedure, additives, and intermediate heat-treatments on perovskite phase content, microstructure development and dielectric properties are reported. The greatest perovskite content (∼99%) and the best dielectric properties (K ≈ 1500–2000, tan∂ ≈ 0.03 at 100 kHz) resulted from rapid thermal processing of individual layers at 800°C. Polarization-reversal measurements are also reported.

Luminescent and UV-shielding bio-polymers have seldom been reported. Zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnOQD) (~3.2 nm) was synthesized by a short-term sol-gel method. ZnOQD possessed a crystal lattice spacing of 0.28 nm and a hexagonal wurtzite structure. Luminescent and UV-shielding ZnOQD/carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) nanocomposite polymer films were successfully fabricated by incorporating ZnOQD into a CMC matrix through a solution casting method. Thermal analysis demonstrated that the ZnOQD reduce the thermal decomposition rate of CMC, and a large number of ZnOQD can promote the catalytic degradation of ZnOQD/CMC nanocomposites. Furthermore, ZnOQD/CMC hybrid polymer films exhibited photoluminescence with maximum emission wavelength at 525 nm. More significantly, ZnOQD/CMC showed prominent UV-absorbing capability. Such ZnOQD/CMC nanocomposite polymer films are promising in UV-shielding and optical applications.
