Self-regulation is a necessary component of developing skilled writers. Self-regulation, on the other hand, is rarely discussed in Malaysian ESL contexts, particularly in terms of ESL writing. This quasi-experimental study evaluated an ESL writing instructional module based on self-regulation with the goal of improving secondary school students' narrative writing. This study, which was conducted as part of a larger study, presented the results of the pilot study. The findings indicated statistically significant improvements in the students' overall writing performance and in each of the four components of writing, namely content, communicative appropriateness, organisation, and language. The findings indicated that the self-regulation-based writing instructional module was effective at improving students' overall writing performance and performance in each of the four writing aspects. Future studies should include a larger sample size, extend the duration of the intervention, and investigate additional variables such as gender and level of proficiency.

Abstract Background: The safe, principled, and standard handling of anticancer drugs can reduce the effects of occupational exposure and promote safe behaviors in nurses. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the effects of standard guidelines education on the safe handling of anti-neoplasm drugs among oncology nurses in Ardabil, Iran.Methods: The quasi-experimental study with one-group pretest-posttest design was performed among 32 nurses employed in the oncology wards of two educational hospitals in Ardabil city, during 2020. All of the nurses in the wards who met the inclusion criteria participated in the study. The data were collected by using a demographic information form and nurses' knowledge assessment questionnaire regarding the standard guidelines for working with antineoplastic drugs, and a standard checklist for examining their performance in this regard. Then, they were analyzed through descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient) in SPSS 22.Results: The mean and standard deviation of the knowledge and performance scores of the oncology nurses was respectively determined 59.56±6.41 and 18.96±2.54, which changed to 66±4.82 and 32.03±2.45 three months after training. The results of t-test represented a statistically significant difference between the level of knowledge and performance before and after the intervention (P=0.001).Conclusions: Based on the results, the standard guidelines education improved the nurses' knowledge and performance on the safe handling of anticancer drugs in the chemotherapy wards. Therefore, it is suggested to pay attention to the promotion of the oncology nurses' awareness in the planning and policy-making of healthcare centers.

This longitudinal, quasi-experimental study investigated students’ cognitive personality type using the Myers-Briggs personality Type Indicator (MBTI) in Internet-based Online and Face-to-Face (F2F) modalities. A total of 1154 students enrolled in 28 Online and 32 F2F sections taught concurrently over a period of fourteen years. The study measured whether the sample is similar to the national average percentage frequency of all 16 different personality types; whether specific personality type students preferred a specific modality of instructions and if this preference changed over time; whether learning occurred in both class modalities; and whether specific personality type students learned more from a specific modality. Data was analyzed using regression, t-test, frequency, and Chi-Squared. The study concluded that data used in the study was similar to the national statistics; that no major differences in preference occurred over time; and that learning did occur in all modalities, with more statistically significant learning found in the Online modality versus F2F for Sensing, Thinking, and Perceiving types. Finally, Sensing and Thinking (ST) and Sensing and Perceiving (SP) group types learned significantly more in Online modality versus F2F.

SummaryObjectives: To compare the completeness of Emergency Department (ED) discharge instructions before and after introduction of an electronic discharge instructions module by scoring compliance with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Outpatient Measure 19 (OP-19).Methods: We performed a quasi-experimental study examining the impact of an electronic discharge instructions module in an academic ED. Three hundred patients discharged home from the ED were randomly selected from two time intervals: 150 patients three months before and 150 patients three to five months after implementation of the new electronic module. The discharge instructions for each patient were reviewed, and compliance for each individual OP-19 element as well as overall OP-19 compliance was scored per CMS specifications. Compliance rates as well as risk ratios (RR) and risk differences (RD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) comparing the overall OP-19 scores and individual OP-19 element scores of the electronic and paper-based discharge instructions were calculated.Results: The electronic discharge instructions had 97.3% (146/150) overall OP-19 compliance, while the paper-based discharge instructions had overall compliance of 46.7% (70/150). Electronic discharge instructions were twice as likely to achieve overall OP-19 compliance compared to the paper-based format (RR: 2.09, 95% CI: 1.75 – 2.48). The largest improvement was in documentation of major procedures and tests performed: only 60% of the paper-based discharge instructions satisfied this criterion, compared to 100% of the electronic discharge instructions (RD: 40.0%, 95% CI: 32.2% – 47.8%). There was a modest difference in medication documentation with 92.7% for paper-based and 100% for electronic formats (RD: 7.3%, 95% CI: 3.2% – 11.5%). There were no statistically significant differences in documentation of patient care instructions and diagnosis between paper-based and electronic formats.Conclusions: With careful design, information technology can improve the completeness of ED patient discharge instructions and performance on the OP-19 quality measure.Citation: Bell EJ, Takhar SS, Beloff JR, Schuur JD, Landman AB.
