For many years, the research on conjugated polymers (CPs) has been mainly focused on their application in organic electronics. Recent works, however, show that due to the unique optical and photophysical properties of CPs, such as high absorption in UV–Vis or even near-infrared (NIR) region and efficient intra-/intermolecular energy transfer, which can be relatively easily optimized, CPs can be considered as an effective light-activated source of versatile and highly reactive singlet oxygen for medical or catalytic use. The aim of this short review is to present the novel possibilities that lie dormant in those exceptional polymers with the extended system of π-conjugated bonds.

Purpose – This paper aims to synthesise coumarine flourescent dyes from a cheap material in a very short time with a very high yield, and by using a clean green chemistry. Design/methodology/approach – Efficient microwave synthesis for some novel iminocoumarins starts from the reaction of p-phenyl-enediamine and ethyl cyanoacetate followed by cyclocondensation with salicylaldehyde derivatives. Findings – The synthesized iminocoumarine compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of the compounds were also recorded. All compounds were fluorescent in 1,4-dioxane solution, they all emitted blue light (440-460 nm). The printing properties were studied, and their applications on printing polyester and polyamide fabrics were studied by silk screen printing. Originality/value – The authors designed efficient microwavel synthesis for some novel iminocoumarine derivatives; The novel procedure features short-reaction time, moderate yields and simple workup; All compounds were fluorescent in 1,4-dioxane solution, and they all emitted blue light; The authors studied their application in printing polyester and polyamide fabrics.

<p>We report efficient synthesis and photophysical properties of a novel fluorescent pyridothiazole based construct by a facile methodology and its application as a sensor for rapid, selective as well as sensitive detection of amyloid fibres. The novel compound has exceptionally high quantum yield and sensitivity. The fluorescence of pyridothiazole construct is completely quenched (Turn-OFF) upon addition of cupric ions and the fluorescence is recovered on addition of amyloidogenic peptides like A<i>β</i>42 (Turn-ON). The control experiment with native and heat treated BSA suggest that the new probe binds to beeta/<i>β</i> sheets present in amyloid. The new probe offers direct visualization of fluorescence ‘Turn-OFF’ ‘Turn-ON’ under long UV without the use of sophisticated instrumentation. Hence, a very simple, facile and cost-effective methodology for the rapid detection of amyloid is presented and it may in all possibility pave the way for the design of a better probe for sensing amyloids than conventional ThT.</p>

Seven unsymmetrical heptamethine dyes with carboxylic acid functionality were synthesized and characterized. These near-infrared dyes exhibit outstanding photophysical properties depending on their heterocyclic moieties and molecular structure. As proof of principle, the dyes were used as photosensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells. Using the most promising dye, an overall conversion efficiency of 1.22% and an almost colorless solar cell were achieved.
