Research has identified the need for improved cultural competence of health care providers regarding the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community’s needs. This article articulates the teaching approach and methodology of an unfolding LGBTQ family case study for undergraduate nursing students. This method provided a forum for exploration of personal biases and gender-affirming techniques, and addressed the challenges of aging for a transgender woman and family within the context of societal stigma and discrimination. Students gained knowledge concerning shifts in family structures and understanding of the nurses’ role encouraging inclusiveness and equitable access in health care settings, advocating for vulnerable populations, and addressing specific health concerns for transgender older adults. Student responses demonstrated increased knowledge of family diversity, and critical thought regarding the intersectionality of discrimination and aging. The findings revealed the case study methodology facilitated student understanding of the unique health and social issues for LGBTQ older adults within a family context.

Abstract Background: There is an increasing demand for nurses to work with older adults with the increase of life expectancy. However, the willingness of nursing students to work with older adults is at a low level. Methods: This study aimed to further explore the willingness and associated factors of undergraduate nursing students to engage in aged care. A convenience sampling method was employed from May to July 2017 in China. Results: Of the 853 students surveyed, 38.1% were willing to engage in aged care after graduation. Expectancy, interest, attainment value, cost, prejudice, whether they like nursing profession and whether they participated in elderly-related activities were the most significant predictors of the students’ willingness to engage in aged care. Conclusions: This suggests that nursing educators have an important part in challenging students' stereotype of older adults and enhance their interest in caring for older adults through both well-designed curriculum and elderly-related activities, so as to improve their confidence and willingness to engage in aged care.

Abstract Undergraduate nursing students are frequently exposed to older adults in the clinical setting, where they assess and manage their diseases and its consequences. But that is not enough! To support healthy aging, students need positive intergenerational learning experiences with older adults to discover the gifts of aging early in their curriculum. The goal of these experiences is to help students reflect on their thoughts about aging and reframe how they view older adults. During this presentation we will provide a tool kit based on our experience incorporating positive intergenerational learning early in our curriculum, offer practical guidelines and share constructive feedback.

Abstract Care of the older adult can be complex and frequently influenced by ageism. Nursing students do not have the frequent opportunity to provide care for older adults. The purpose of this pilot study was to expose sophomore nursing students to older adults earlier and more often in the undergraduate curriculum by providing a unique clinical experience at St. Thomas of Villanova Monastery, a residential facility for retired Augustinian priests. This study examines the experience of students’ participation in this clinical experience. Qualitative content analysis of 12 student logs was conducted. Themes that emerged included: age-related changes, environmental considerations, psychosocial needs and changes, and consideration of gerontology as a career choice and existing bias. Students gained a valuable understanding of the unique age-related changes that older adults are experiencing. Early experiences are vital in the curriculum and provide enhanced engagement in gerontology.
