Most studies on refugee populations are organized around trauma-related issues and focus on explaining pathological factors. Few studies are anchored in general developmental psychology with the aim of exploring normal age-specific developmental tasks and how the special circumstances associated with forced migration can influence how developmental tasks are negotiated. This study is part of a larger mixed method study seeking to identify resilience-promoting and resilience-inhibiting factors, on individual and contextual levels, among asylum seekers and refugees on the move (passing through Serbia) and settled in reception centers in Norway. A strategic sample of 20 adolescent and young adult refugees/asylum seekers during flight in Serbia (10) and after arrival in Norway (10) was chosen from a sample of 178 refugees interviewed in depth in Serbia and at receptions centers in Norway. The sample reflects the focus of this paper, which is to explore adolescent and young adult refugees/asylum seekers’ psychological and social needs and resources during flight to and after arrival in the host country, including how developmental tasks are negotiated. Through qualitative analysis, experiences associated with the developmental changes the participants experienced before, during, and after flight are contextualized. Their sense of self, their relationships with their families and their perceptions of their situation as adolescents or young adults in a highly unpredictable situation are presented in the light of relevant theory and findings from similar refugee studies. All the participants have fled from dangerous and intolerable situations in their home countries. They describe extreme dangers during flight in contexts that are unpredictable and where they feel lonely and unsupported. Most have unmet psychosocial needs and have received little support or help for their mental health issues during flight or after arrival in Norway. Suggestions for interventions and resilience-promoting actions are given based on the findings of the study.

Objective: To identify the empirical indicators of basic and social human needs found in nursing care for people treated in Burn Treatment Units. Materials and Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional and exploratory study of the integrative literature review type. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 of the 265 articles identified made up the sample. The data collected were inserted in spreadsheets for descriptive statistical analysis and inferences, analyzed using the Microsoft Office Excel 2010 program and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0 software. The distribution of empirical indicators was carried out, which were later discussed based on scientific productions in the area. Results: The search resulted in the identification of 113 empirical indicators, 89 corresponding to psychobiological needs, 21 to psychosocial needs and 03 to psycho-spiritual needs. The needs that most presented empirical indicators were Need for Vascular Regulation (n=18) and Need for Oxygenation (n=16). However, the Need for Emotional Security showed more frequent indicators. Conclusion: The burn, in addition to affecting physical integrity, also affects emotional aspects, contributing to changes in mental integrity. The existence of few studies with the theme highlights the need for scientific production related to the theme, in order to contribute to human and holistic nursing practice.

Objective To examine women’s journeys with gynecologic cancer from before diagnosis through death and identify elements of their healthcare experience that warrant improvement. Methods This exploratory study used longitudinal progress notes data from a multispecialty practice in Northern California. The sample included women with stage IV gynecological cancer diagnosed after 2011 and who died before 2018. Available progress notes from prior to diagnosis to death were qualitatively analyzed. Results We identified 32 women, (median age 61 years) with mostly uterine (n=17) and ovarian (n=9) cancers and median survival of 9.2 months (min:2.9 and max:47.5). Sixteen (50%) received outpatient palliative care and 18 (56%) received hospice care. The analysis found wide variation in documentation about communication about diagnosis, prognosis, goals of care, stopping treatment, and starting hospice care. Challenges included escalating/severe symptoms, repeated urgent care/emergency department/hospital encounters, and lack of or late access to palliative and hospice care. Notes also illustrated how patient background and goals influenced care trajectory and communication. Documentation styles varied substantially, with palliative care notes more consistently documenting conversations about goals of care and psychosocial needs. Conclusion This analysis of longitudinal illness experience of women with advanced gynecological cancer suggests that clinicians may want to (1) prioritize earlier discussion about goals of care; (2) provide supplemental support to patients with higher needs, possibly through palliative care or navigation; and (3) write notes to enhance patient understanding now that patients may access all notes.

BACKGROUND The negative psychosocial impacts of cancer diagnoses and treatments are well documented. Virtual care has become an essential mode of care delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic and online support groups (OSGs) are shown to improve accessibility to psychosocial and supportive care. The de Souza Institute offers CancerChatCanada, a therapist-led OSG service where sessions are monitored by an artificial intelligence-based co-facilitator (AICF). AICF is equipped with a recommender system that uses natural language processing to tailor online resources to patients according to their psychosocial needs. OBJECTIVE To outline the development protocol and to evaluate AICF on its precision and recall in recommending resources to cancer OSG members. METHODS Human input informed the design and evaluation on its ability to 1) appropriately identify key words indicating a psychosocial concern and 2) recommend the most appropriate online resource to the OSG member expressing each concern. Three rounds of human evaluation and algorithm improvement were performed iteratively. RESULTS We evaluated 7,190 outputs and achieved .797 precision, .981 recall, and an F1 score of .880 by the third round of evaluation. Resources were recommended to 48 patients and 25 (52.1%) accessed at least one resource. Of those who accessed the resources, 75.4% found them useful. CONCLUSIONS The preliminary findings suggest that AICF can help provide tailored support for cancer OSG members with high precision, recall, and satisfaction. AICF has undergone rigorous human evaluation and the results provide much-needed evidence, while outlining potential strengths and weaknesses for future applications in supportive care.

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm that affects women.  One of the treatments for breast cancer is chemotherapy which is carried out according to a particular schedule with a specified length of therapy to increase the patient's recovery rate.  In addition to the physiological effects, chemotherapy also has a psychological impact on the patient.  Fulfillment of psychosocial needs is important to improve the quality of life of patients caused by changes in physical, social, cognitive, spiritual, emotional and role functions.  The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the cycle of chemoteraphy with psychosocial problems in breast cancer patients. Method: This study is a quantitative correlational study using 54 breast cancer patients as samples by purposive sampling.  Data collection was carried out during April 2020 to June 2020 in the chemotherapy room at Koja Hospital, North Jakarta. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS 21) questionnaire was used to identify psychosocial problems in breast cancer patients.  Statistical analysis of the Spearman rank test was carried out to analyze the relationship between chemotherapy cycles and psychosocial problems. Results: The results showed that there was a relationship between chemotherapy cycles and psychosocial problems (p value 0.001) although it showed a weak relationship between those  two variables (r 0.257).  Psychosocial problems identified included anxiety (53%), depression (9.3%), low self-esteem (16.7%) and stress (20.4%). Conclusion: Nurses need to provide comprehensive nursing care for patients undergoing chemotherapy including identifying problems related to physical complaints and psychosocial needs so that nursing interventions can be given comprehensively to breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Purpose Interprofessional collaboration is necessary for handling the complex psychosocial needs of prisoners. This collaboration must be addressed to avoid high recidivism rates and the human and societal costs linked to them. Challenges are exacerbated by a linear approach to handling prisoners’ problems, silo working between welfare agencies and professional boundaries between frontline workers. There are few adequate theoretical frameworks and tools to address these challenges in the prison context. The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions that frontline staff working in Norwegian prison facilities have regarding interprofessional collaboration in providing mental health services for prisoners. Design/methodology/approach This study had a non-experimental, cross-sectional design to explore perceptions of interprofessional collaboration in a prison context. Descriptive and multifactorial analyses (exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis) were used to explore the data. Findings The analysis showed that three factors, communication, organizational culture and domain, explained 95% of the variance. Results are discussed using relational coordination, as well as the conceptual PINCOM model, as a theoretical framework. Originality/value Few studies explicitly explore collaboration between professionals in mental health and prison services despite its being a prerequisite to achieving sufficient services for prisoners. To our knowledge, this current study is one of the first in Norway to explore collaboration in a prison context by analysing quantitative data and focusing on frontline workers perception of the phenomenon.

Background A thorough psychosocial assessment is needed during the evaluation of candidacy for ventricular assist device placement to identify potential barriers that would limit success with the device. Ventricular assist device coordinators are generally involved in the psychosocial assessment of the patient, allowing them to provide a more holistic approach to ventricular assist device candidacy during discussions at multidisciplinary meetings. There is a gap in the literature describing the psychological journey of patients after ventricular assist device implantation and the challenges ventricular assist device coordinators face when caring for this complex population. Objective The psychological journey of 3 patients with a ventricular assist device was explored to determine if common themes exist and to describe the experiences faced by the ventricular assist device coordinators with each patient. Methods Three patient case scenarios are described, as are the interactions with the patients’ ventricular assist device coordinator team members. Results All 3 case scenarios demonstrate similarities of younger ages, the need of family and social support, and ventricular assist device coordinators who went beyond the call of duty to assist in the successful heart transplantation for 2 cases and the successful decommission of the ventricular assist device in another case. Conclusion The psychosocial needs of patients with a ventricular assist device and ventricular assist device coordinators require ongoing assessment because of the many physical and emotional challenges that arise during the time a patient has an implanted ventricular assist device.

Background: While the volume of Emergency Department (ED) visits has declined during the 2019 novel coronavirus disease or COVID-19, the opposite has been observed with mental-health related visits. The need to screen and manage potential COVID-19 symptoms in parallel with psychiatric complaints have imposed new challenges in the ED at an academic public hospital. Objective: The objective is to share operational modifications in addressing the challenges related to the influx of ED mentalhealth related complaints at the departmental, hospital-wide, and city-wide level within an academic, public hospital. Methods: At the departmental level, a triage algorithm for screening patients with concerning symptoms was developed. A dedicated Respiratory Decision Unit with psychiatrically safe rooms that adhered to infection prevention protocol was also created. All staff were trained to utilize personal protective equipment through lectures, asynchronous learning, and multidisciplinary simulations. The ED team worked with hospital leadership to increase inpatient medical psychiatric bed capacity and to develop testing protocols for patients being admitted to allow for cohorting of symptomatic patients. At the city level, leadership within the three main organizations that provide mental health services to the city met regularly to address operational issues. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed new challenges in terms of increased psychosocial needs while limiting transmission risks. Based on the experiences shared, a multitier approach is necessary. At all levels, the goals were to screen appropriately, decrease transmission risk, and maintain throughput. The purpose of this descriptive manuscript is to encourage dialogue and to raise awareness about the unique needs of the mental health system.
