Correlation and combining ability of main chemical components in sorghum stems and leaves using cytoplasmic male sterile lines for improving biomass feedstocks

Abstract Background A combining ability analysis is a useful tool of plant breeders in screening and identifying promising parental lines with high potential for developing competitive rice hybrids. Also, one important factor that strongly determines the suitability of commercial utilization of hybrid rice parental lines is their extent of seed producibility. Methods In this study, the combining ability, floral biology and seed producibility of cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) lines were investigated to identify good combiners with good seed production potential. The Line × Tester analysis was used to determine the general combining abilities (GCA) of hybrid rice parental lines, and Specific Combining Abilities (SCA) of the different hybrid combinations. A correlation analysis was also done to determine floral traits that influence the outcrossing rate of the CMS lines. There were 4 CMS lines, 6 restorer lines, 24 hybrid combinations and 1 check variety in a randomized complete block Design (RCBD) with 3 replicates. Results Results indicated that CMS lines IR79128B and IR102758B were good combiners and the most promising restorer lines were D2031-7-1-2R, Hanareumbyeo 2, and XTR036-54-10R. Based on specific combining ability test, the most promising combination was entry 10 (IR58025A/D2013-7-1-2R). It has the highest yield of 7496 kg ha−1, a high positive SCA score of 570.54, and highest standard heterosis of 12.9%. Based on floral traits, IR79128B was the most promising with a high positive GCA score of 186.93, panicle exertion rate of 74.8%, and a high outcrossing rate of 51%. There was a significant positive association between outcrossing rate, duration of floral opening, panicle exertion rate, and general combining ability. Conclusion The floral traits found to be significantly associated with outcrossing rate are useful selection criteria not only for identifying economically usable CMS lines but also for developing new and promising parental lines and hybrids. These CMS lines do not only give heterotic combinations but are also commercially producible, the two most important factors to the success of any hybrid rice breeding program.

Brassica vegetables are an important source of dietary nutrition. The nutritional quality of mineral elements is becoming one of the most important studied traits because of the year-round supply of vegetables in China. However, there are few reports about breeding and utilisation of mineral elements in non-heading Chinese cabbage (Brassica napus L.). Using two newly reported CMS (cytoplasmic male-sterile) lines of non-heading Chinese cabbage, we conducted incomplete diallel experiments to analyse heterosis, combining ability and cytoplasmic effects for mineral elements such as calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn). Heterosis analysis of mineral elements indicated that the crossing combinations A1 (hau CMS) × C03, A2 (eru CMS) × C03 and A2 × C11 exhibited desirable positive effects of mid-parent heterosis and high-parent heterosis in terms of mineral element content that could be exploited for commercial purposes. Analysis of general combining ability (GCA) effects of the parental lines indicated that the tester C11 was superior for the improvement of the four mineral elements; CMS line A1 had greater GCA effects than CMS line A2 for Ca and Fe. The hybrid combinations A2 × C11, B × C05 and B × C12 showed positive specific combining ability (SCA) effects for the four mineral elements on overall performance. The analysis revealed that cytoplasmic effects of hau CMS and eru CMS were both positive for Ca and Fe, and that A1 had more obvious cytoplasmic effects than did A2. These results indicated that the two isonuclear, alloplasmic CMS lines of non-heading Chinese cabbage might be useful for improving the nutritional quality traits of cruciferous vegetables and for heterosis utilisation.

An investigation was undertaken to assess the combining ability for yield and quality traits in rice. Three WA cytoplasmic male sterile lines of rice i.e., IR-58025A, IR-68897A and Pusa 6A were crossed with six restorer genotypes i.e., Sanwal Basmati, Pusa Sugandh-2, Pusa Sugandh-3, Pusa Sugandh-5, Pusa 2517-2-51-1 and HURJM- 59221 in line x tester design to generate 18 hybrids. Among the female parents, IR-58025A revealed significant desirable value of GCA effect for yield per plant and most of the quality traits. Among the pollen parents, Pusa Sugandh-3 revealed significant desirable value of GCA effect for most of the yield traits. However, Pusa Sugandh-5 revealed significant desirable value of GCA effect for most of the quality traits. Pusa 6A x Pusa Sugandh-2 evinced the highest significant value of SCA effect for grain yield followed by IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5. However, IR- 68897A x Pusa 2517-2-51-1 followed by IR-58025A x Sanwal Basmati revealed the significant desirable value of SCA effect for most of the quality traits. For both yield and quality traits, IR-58025A x Pusa Sugandh-5, IR-68897A x HUR-JM-59221 and Pusa 6A x Pusa Sugandh-2 were found to be relatively better performing. Thus, present study aims to develop hybrids performing better for both yield and quality traits.
