Abstract The threat of catheter-associated bloodstream infections (CABSIs) among hemodialysis patients is present beyond health care settings. With the rise of antimicrobial-resistant infections, the benefits of partnering with patients in preventing CABSIs cannot be overemphasized. Patient education is the cornerstone of patient engagement, and a prerequisite for other involvement strategies. The responsibility for educating patients is multidisciplinary and must be accentuated at all stages of hemodialysis care. Enhancing patient self-efficacy in preventing CABSIs requires them to have an adequate level of knowledge on infection prevention and the skills and confidence to self-care in the community. Providing patient education is the first step to empower patients, facilitating their ownership of their journey in care and safeguarding them from infections.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Public Institution(s). Main funding source(s): Icelandic regional development institute, The Icelandic Nurse´s Association, RHA-University of Akureyri, HSA, The Health Directorate of East-Iceland. OnBehalf KRANS People living in rural Iceland have higher rate of cardiovascular risk factors, healthcare utilization and death and worse self-reported health than people in urban areas. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the experience of people with coronary heart disease, living in rural Iceland, of patient education, surveillance, and self-care support. The participants (N = 14, age 52-79 years, 8 male, 6 female) were interviewed 6-12 months after hospital discharge following a cardiac event (in 2018-2019). Systematic text-condensation was used for analysis. The findings were categorized into three main themes: 1) Education and support describes inadequate patient education and support from health professionals after discharge from hospital and how the internet was the main information source supplemented with spouse’s and family support. 2) Local health care services describe the lack of and importance of access to health professionals, stable services and underutilization of primary health care in the local area. 3) Self-care behavior describes the lack of professional support with lifestyle changes and how the participants manage self-care in their local area as well as their attitude towards the disease. In conclusion, the results indicate that access to continuous health services and person-centered support focusing on prevention strategies is widely impaired in rural areas in Iceland.

Purpose This study aims to examine the association between nurses’ ageism and their knowledge about aging and socio-demographic and professional characteristics in recent international nursing research studies. Design/methodology/approach An extensive search of seven databases covering papers since 2000 was undertaken and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed. Findings Ageism among nurses is still poorly understood. It is evident that ageism is associated with poor nurses’ level of knowledge about aging. A range of nurses’ demographical and professional characteristics have been examined as potential predictors of ageism, but they were inconsistent with positive, negative and neutral associations. Originality/value There is a lack of robustly designed studies investigating the association of nurses’ level of knowledge about aging and their socio-demographical and professional characteristics to ageism. Future descriptive-correlational and interventional studies are recommended to understand and target ageism in health-care settings.

Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous Gram-positive rod seldom considered pathogenic in clinical isolates. However, it possesses multiple virulence factors explaining why it has been linked to fulminant and pyogenic infections in vulnerable hosts. Its recovery from sterile samples in immunocompromised patients cannot be disregarded. Premature infants would fall into this category. We describe the case of a neonate born at 26 weeks of gestational age, who died of a rapidly progressive B. cereus necrotizing pneumonia following suspected nosocomial acquisition. The rapidity of his course and the autopsy findings of necrosis with minimal inflammation suggest a toxin-mediated process. Pathologists should be aware of this pathogen and obtain proper microbiological samples in the presence of such autopsy findings, as the diagnosis may have infection-prevention implications in health-care settings.

Kata kunci: diabetes melitus, edukasi pasien, literasi gizi, efikasi diri, manajemen perawatan diri Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease caused by disturbances of insulin production and or insulin resistance which causes high blood glucose levels that may lead to health problems with a high risk of illness and death. Self-care management is one of the factors that determine the health status and quality of life of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the direct and indirect effects and magnitude of the effect of social support, patient education, nutrition literacy and self-efficacy to self-care management for type 2 DM patients. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The participants were 75 DM patients in Ciputat Subdistrict, South Tangerang. Statistical analysis was conducted with Structural Equation Model (SEM) using SmartPLS 2.0 and SPSS 20. The research findings showed that self-care management of DM type 2 patients is influenced by social support factors (24.9%), patient education factor (13,3%), nutrition literacy factor (7.9%), and self-efficacy factor (8.2%). The structural model of this study described self-care management variables of 54.7%. The public health center, especially the non-communicable diseases (NCD) programs, should further increase the involvement of the family in educational activities related to DM patients self-care to improve the quality of self-care management. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Patient Education, Nutrition literacy, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Care Management
