AbstractHeteropoly acids, HPA are well known solid acid and oxidation catalysts that find application in hetergeneous and homogeneous reactions. In the former, surface area and stability problems are diminshed by supporting the HPA. Typical supports include oxide substrates and porous carbon materials. The HPA's show some instability on these supports however. In this work, we demonstrate that HPA encapsulated in sol-gel silica matrices show enhanced catalytic performance without compromising the catalytic activity of the HPA. In addition, the specific role of the support in the catalytic process is described as well.

This paper discusses the catalytic activity of ZnO/CuO/nanographene platelets composites under visible light and ultrasound irradiation separately. The ZnO/CuO/nanographene platelets composites were synthesized using a sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption spectroscopy were employed to investigate the structural and surface area of the catalyst. The catalytic activity results showed that the presence of nanographene platelets in ZnO/CuO nanocomposites improved its efficiency in degrading methylene blue. A scavenger method was also used to understand the role of charged carriers and the active radical involved in the catalytic activity.

The sulfated zirconia catalysts were was prepared by sol–gel processes consist of varied templating method. Both preparations consist of sol-gel synthesis of zirconium dioxide followed by sulfatation process by using NH4SO4solid reaction method. Two different templating agent; urea and cetyltrimetyl ammonium bromide was used in sol-gel processes. The prepared material was characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) measurements. From the XRD measurement it can be concluded that both materials consist of ZrO2in combined phases while from BET surface area analysis it can be noted that material prepared by urea template has higher specific surface area compared to that use CTAB template. Both materials exhibit the activity as acid catalyst in microwave assisted conversion of citronellal. It is also confirmed that the higher the surface area the higher total conversion of citronellal obtained. Study on the correlation between physicochemical properties of materials with the catalytic activity was discussed in this paper.

Aqueous phase processes at high pressure are considered one of the most promising thermochemical processes to valorize wet residual streams, in order to produce value-added chemicals. Among them, glycerol hidrogenolysis (HG) has been intensely studied. Although many different catalytic systems for HG have been studied in the last years, the Ni/CeO2 catalytic system has not been so deeply performed in liquid phase.  This work studies the hydrogenolysis of glycerol without external H2 supply as a pathway to obtain value-added chemicals using Ni/CeO2 catalysts. Different synthesis parameters were changed, in order to determine their influence on the catalytic activity. In this process, 1,2–propanediol and ethylene glycol are produced, compounds which are valuable due to their use in chemical synthesis, antifreeze fluids, and others.
