The rapid growth and development of motorisation combined with relatively small investments made to improving transportation infrastructure in cities, as well as in tourism destinations, has led to serious problems in the unobstructed movement of vehicles in public traffic areas. Traffic congestion on roadways, in ferryboat ports and at state borders during the summer months and year-round lines of cars going to or returning from work are a regular presence in traffic in most urban and tourism destinations in Croatia, as well as in the rest of Europe. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) can be implemented in urban and tourism centres, which, for example, have no opportunity for increasing the capacity of their traffic networks by constructing new, or expanding existing, transportation infrastructure, and no opportunity for increasing parking capacities. The only solution would be to optimise traffic networking by introducing intelligent technologies. Intelligent transportation systems and services represent a coupling of information and telecommunication technologies with transportation means and infrastructure to ensure greater efficiency in the mobility of people and goods. ITS implementation helps to provide better information to motorists and travellers (tourists); improve traffic and tourist flows, cargo transportation, public passenger-transportation; facilitate the work of emergency services; enable electronic traffic-related payments; enhance the security of people in road traffic; and monitor weather conditions and the environment. To motorists the system provides guidance to roads on which traffic is less intense, guidance to available parking spaces, and guidance, for example, to a good restaurant or interesting tourist attraction. his paper focuses, in particular, on ITS application in city and tourism destinations in connection with parking problems. Guiding vehicles to the closest vacant parking space helps to reduce traffic congestion, reduce the amount of time lost in searching and increase the occupancy rate of car-parks

Accurate road information is important for applications involving road maintenance, intelligent transportation, and road network updates. Mobile laser scanning (MLS) can effectively extract road information. However, accurately extracting road edges based on large-scale data for complex road conditions, including both structural and non-structural road types, remains difficult. In this study, a robust method to automatically extract structural and non-structural road edges based on a topological network of laser points between adjacent scan lines and auxiliary surfaces is proposed. The extraction of road and curb points was achieved mainly from the roughness of the extracted surface, without considering traditional thresholds (e.g., height jump, slope, and density). Five large-scale road datasets, containing different types of road curbs and complex road scenes, were used to evaluate the practicality, stability, and validity of the proposed method via qualitative and quantitative analyses. Measured values of the correctness, completeness, and quality of extracted road edges were over 95.5%, 91.7%, and 90.9%, respectively. These results confirm that the proposed method can extract road edges from large-scale MLS datasets without the need for auxiliary information on intensity, image, or geographic data. The proposed method is effective regardless of whether the road width is fixed, the road is regular, and the existence of pedestrians and vehicles. Most importantly, the proposed method provides a valuable solution for road edge extraction that is useful for road authorities when developing intelligent transportation systems, such as those required by self-driving vehicles.

Bridges play an important role in transportation infrastructure systems. Intelligent and digital management of bridges group is an essential part of the future intelligent transportation infrastructure system. This paper proposes a digital twin system for bridges group in the regional transportation infrastructure network, which is interconnected by measured traffic loads. In physical space, a full-bridge traffic load monitoring system based on information fusion of weigh-in-motion (WIM) and multi-source heterogeneous machine vision is set up on the target bridge to measure traffic loads, also lightweight sensors are employed on the bridges group for structural response information. Furthermore, by establishing mechanical analysis models in the corresponding digital space and using the measured traffic loads as links, the working condition perception and safety warning of all bridges in the regional transportation network is achieved, forming an important support for further intelligent transportation infrastructure system. The proposed digital twin system has been preliminarily implemented in a bridges group around Shanghai, China, demonstrating the feasibility of the technical framework proposed in this paper and the bright prospects.
