Abstract BETHLEHEM LUKENS PLATE HPS-70W is a high-performance steel (HPS) developed through a cooperative agreement among the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), and the Department of the Navy. This steel is an improved version of ASTM A 709 grade 70W. This datasheet provides information on composition and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness. AbstractThe steel structure under the action of alternating load for a long time is prone to fatigue failure and affects the safety of the engineering structure. For steel structures in complex environments such as corrosive media and fires, the remaining fatigue life is more difficult to predict theoretically. To this end, the article carried out fatigue tests on Q420qD high-performance steel cross joints under three different working conditions, established a 95% survival rate $$S{ - }N$$ S - N curves, and analyzed the effects of corrosive media and high fire temperatures on its fatigue performance. And refer to the current specifications to evaluate its fatigue performance. The results show that the fatigue performance of the cross joint connection is reduced under the influence of corrosive medium, and the fatigue performance of the cross joint connection is improved under the high temperature of fire. When the number of cycles is more than 200,000 times, the design curves of EN code, GBJ code, and GB code can better predict the fatigue life of cross joints without treatment, only corrosion treatment, and corrosion and fire treatment, and all have sufficient safety reserve.

There is an increasing interest in the lightweight design of ship and offshore structures, more specifically, choosing aluminum alloys or other lightweight high-performance materials to build structure components and ship equipments. Due to its better mechanical properties and easy assembly nature, extruded aluminum alloy stiffened plates are widely used in hull structures. When the load on the hull reaches a certain level during sailing, partial or overall instability of stiffened plate makes significant contribution in an event of collapse of the hull structure. It is very necessary to investigate the ultimate strength of aluminum alloy stiffened plate to ensure the ultimate bearing capacity of large aluminum alloy hull structure. Most of studies of the ultimate strength of stiffened plates deal with stiffened plates with T–shaped stiffeners. Stiffeners of other shapes have seldom been explored. In this research, the ultimate strength of six different cross–section aluminum alloy stiffened plates and one steel stiffened plate was studied based on the non–linear finite element analysis (FEA). Taking into account stiffness, weight and other issues, the new cross–section aluminum stiffener has finally been concluded for replacing the original steel stiffener in upper deck of a warship.

Because the methods used to compute the live load distribution for moment and shear force in modern highway bridges subjected to vehicle loading are generally constrained by their range of applicability, refined analysis methods are necessary when this range is exceeded or new materials are used. This study developed a simplified method to calculate the live load distribution factors for skewed composite slab-on-girder bridges with high-performance-steel (HPS) girders whose parameters exceed the range of applicability defined by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)’s Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications. Bridge databases containing information on actual bridges and prototype bridges constructed from three different types of steel and structural parameters that exceeded the range of applicability were developed and the bridge modeling verified using results reported for field tests of actual bridges. The resulting simplified equations for the live load distribution factors of shear force and bending moment were based on a rigorous statistical analysis of the data. The proposed equations provided comparable results to those obtained using finite element analysis, giving bridge engineers greater flexibility when designing bridges with structural parameters that are outside the range of applicability defined by AASHTO in terms of span length, skewness, and bridge width.

When it comes to engineering, high performance is always a desired goal. In this context, regarding stiffened plates, the search for better geometric configurations able to minimize the out-of-plane displacements become interesting. So, this study aimed to analyze several stiffened plates defined by the Constructal Design Method (CDM) and solved through the Finite Element Method (FEM) using the ANSYS® software. After that, these plates are compared among each other through the Exhaustive Search (ES) technique. To do so, a non-stiffened rectangular plate was adopted as reference. Then, a portion of its steel volume was converted into stiffeners through the ϕ parameter, which represents the ratio between the volume of the stiffeners and the total volume of the reference plate. Taking into consideration the value of ϕ = 0.3, 75 different stiffened plates arrangements were proposed: 25 with rectangular stiffeners oriented at 0°; 25 with rectangular stiffeners oriented at 45° and 25 with trapezoidal stiffeners oriented at 0°. Maintaining the total volume of material constant, it was investigated the geometry influence on the maximum deflection of these stiffened plates. The results have shown trapezoidal stiffeners oriented at 0° are more effective to reduce the maximum deflections than rectangular stiffeners also oriented at 0°. It was also observed that rectangular stiffeners oriented at 45° presented the smallest maximum deflections for the majority of the analyzed cases, when compared to the trapezoidal and rectangular stiffeners oriented at 0°.
