Synergistic effects and kinetics of rGO-modified TiO2 nanocomposite on adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of humic acid

The degradation of humic acid in water by means of photocatalytic method has been studied. The influence of hydrogen peroxide and bicarbonate has also been investigated. The kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation of humic acid in various concentrations (50-500 mg/L) has been followed by the determination of TOC, COD and UV-vis spectra of the reaction solution. While the pseudo first order rate constants of 50 mg/L humic acid were found 0.016, 0.03 and 0.036 for TOC, Color400 and UV254, the degradation rate constants for these parameters were found 0.029, 0.069 and 0.057 in the presence of 1×10−2M H2O2. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic has also been sucessfully applied to the photocatalytic degradation data. It was found that bicarbonate ions slowed down the degradation rate by scavenging the hydroxyl radicals. Low pH value has been found to be favorable for color removal in the absence of hydrogen peroxide whereas natural pH gave the best results for color removal in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

This work reports a detailed characterization of the antimicrobial profile of two trimethoprim-like molecules (compounds 1a and 1b) identified in previous studies. Both molecules displayed remarkable antimicrobial activity, particularly when combined with sulfamethoxazole. In disk diffusion assays on Petri dishes, compounds 1a and 1b showed synergistic effects with colistin. Specifically, in combinations with low concentrations of colistin, very large increases in the activities of compounds 1a and 1b were determined, as demonstrated by alterations in the kinetics of bacterial growth despite only slight changes in the fractional inhibitory concentration index. The effect of colistin may be to increase the rate of antibiotic entry while reducing efflux pump activity. Compounds 1a and 1b were susceptible to extrusion by efflux pumps, whereas the inhibitor phenylalanine arginyl β-naphthylamide (PAβN) exerted effects similar to those of colistin. The interactions between the target enzyme (dihydrofolate reductase), the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), and the studied molecules were explored using enzymology tools and computational chemistry. A model based on docking results is reported.

Degradation of humic acid in aqueous solution containing TiO2 coated on ceramics beads under irradiation of 254 nm UV light has been conducted in batch reactor. The aim of this experiment was to study photocatalytic degradation of humic acid in peat water. The irradiation of the humic acid in aqueous solution was conducted in various conditions i.e solely uv, in the presence of TiO2-slurry and TiO2 beads. The color intensity, humic acid residue, conductivity and COD (chemical oxygen demand) of the solution were analyzed before and after irradiation.  The compounds produced during photodegradation were identified using HPLC. The results showed that after photocatalytic degradation, the color intensity and the COD value of the solution decreased, while the conductivity of water increased indicating mineralization of the peat water occurred. In addition, oxalic acid as the product of degradation was observed.
