The prospects of studying the biochorological structure of the selected species using a phenetic approach are shown in a series of common frogs from four biotopes characterized by varying degrees of spatial isolation. The most detailed characterization of the spatial-genetic structure can be obtained by analyzing the spotting of the dorsal surface of the body. Also, for these purposes, it is possible to use variations of such elements of the body covering pattern as the shape of the interscapular spot and the number of stripes on the thigh.

Abstract We present a detailed characterization of the extremely dusty main-sequence star TYC 8830 410 1. This system hosts inner planetary system dust (T dust ≈ 300 K) with a fractional infrared luminosity of ∼1%. Mid-infrared spectroscopy reveals a strong, mildly crystalline solid-state emission feature. TYC 8830 410 1 (spectral type G9 V) has a 49.5″ separation M4-type companion comoving and co-distant with it, and we estimate a system age of ∼600 Myr. TYC 8830 410 1 also experiences “dipper”-like dimming events as detected by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, and characterized in more detail with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope. These recurring eclipses suggest at least one roughly star-sized cloud of dust orbits the star in addition to assorted smaller dust structures. The extreme properties of the material orbiting TYC 8830 410 1 point to dramatic dust-production mechanisms that likely included something similar to the giant impact event thought to have formed the Earth–Moon system, although hundreds of millions of years after such processes are thought to have concluded in the solar system. TYC 8830 410 1 holds promise to deliver significant advances in our understanding of the origin, structure, and evolution of extremely dusty inner planetary systems.

In this work we will report the formulation of novel 3-(pyridinylamino)-1-ferrocenylpropan-1-ones. A fruitful aza-Michael addition of pyridinamine moiety to a conjugated enone, 1-ferrocenylpropenone, has been accomplished by an ultrasonic irradiation of the mixture of these reactants. As the catalyst montmorillonite K-10 has been used and the reaction has been carried out as solvent-free, yielding ferrocene containing Mannich bases, compounds considered as important precursors in organic synthesis. The reaction score has been evaluated on three examples. The prepared products have been purified by column chromatography. In addition, a detailed characterization of the obtained 3-(pyridin-2-ylamino)-1-ferrocenylpropan-1-on and 3-(pyridin-3-ylamino)-1-ferrocenylpropan-1-on has been completed by IR and NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analyses.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS), an II–VI group semiconductor material, is one of the most investigated semiconductors in thin film form. In this work, we synthesized CdS thin films with improved film morphology in the presence of ethylene diamine (EA) as the complexing agent by chemical bath deposition (CD) at lower pH. Detailed characterization reveals the presence of cubic phase CdS with a band gap of 2.39 eV with the resultant morphology significantly influenced by the composition of the growth solution. The resultant CdS films finds prospective application as a humidity sensor with a high sensor response of 2.61 corresponding to 80% relative humidity.

Abstract Words are not isolated entities within a language. In this paper, we measure the number of choices transmitted in natural language by means of the von Neumann entropy of language networks. This quantity, introduced in Quantum Information accounts, provides a detailed characterization of network complexities. The simulations are based on a large parallel corpus of 362 languages across 55 linguistic families (focusing on the sub-sample of 85 languages from the Americas). With this, we constructed language networks as a simple way to describe word connectivity patterns for each language. We studied several aspects of the von Neumann entropy of language networks. First, we discovered large groups of languages with low average degree and high von Neumann entropy. The results suggested also that large von Neumann entropy is associated with word entropy (as a proxy for morphological complexity), and is inversely related to degree regularity. This means that there are pressures at play that keep a balance between word morphological complexity and patterns of connections between words. We suggested also a strong influence of functional words on low von Neumann entropy languages. Our approach is thus a simple network-based contribution to establish cross-linguistic language comparisons from textual data.

In 2012, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) emerged in Saudi Arabia and was mostly associated with severe respiratory illness in humans. Dromedary camels are the zoonotic reservoir for MERS-CoV. To investigate the biology of MERS-CoV in camelids, we developed a well-differentiated airway epithelial cell (AEC) culture model for Llama glama and Camelus bactrianus. Histological characterization revealed progressive epithelial cellular differentiation with well-resemblance to autologous ex vivo tissues. We demonstrate that MERS-CoV displays a divergent cell tropism and replication kinetics profile in both AEC models. Furthermore, we observed that in the camelid AEC models MERS-CoV replication can be inhibited by both type I and III interferons (IFNs). In conclusion, we successfully established camelid AEC cultures that recapitulate the in vivo airway epithelium and reflect MERS-CoV infection in vivo. In combination with human AEC cultures, this system allows detailed characterization of the molecular basis of MERS-CoV cross-species transmission in respiratory epithelium.

SEG and the German Geophysical Society (DGG) held their first joint workshop in early March at DGG's 2021 Annual Meeting. The workshop was part of a new cooperative aim between DGG and SEG to promote engagement between the societies, to foster growth in geophysics, and to expand the community of scientists and engineers tackling important geophysical problems. The 2021 workshop theme, “Scientific Drilling,” was chosen because scientific drilling provides access to rocks and fluids in the subsurface that are essential for ground truthing interpretations from geophysical data and geologic interpretation, for providing samples and in-situ data for detailed characterization, and for providing inputs to models. Consequently, the workshop aimed to attract interest across many subfields of geophysics.
